'14 IL LB Clifton Garrett

Crazy. He seemed like he was all LSU. I suspect he will head to A&M to reunite with Chief. I remember on his official that his family hit it off with Thigpen and the Bates family.

Maybe. Chief was a big reason he went there. i am not sure we will have the type of need he will want to see at that position when he is recruited again. if all this young cats are as good as they look then we are going to be stacked at LB.

He's a thumper though. His HS film reminds me of an old school MLB.

Wanted this kid to be a Vol big time, we were a finalist, he did like us a lot. Maybe one year juco, and he will like the familiar aspect of our staff, hopefully, the main ones that pull recruits and coach them up are here next year, but Chavis leaving probably turned him of Lsu instantly considering that was a big reason choosing the corndogs. So I bet Us, A&M, and a couple big ten school will be in it.

Lets not discount the fact that he was a 3rd string linebacker behind a walk-on in an already thin LB corps.

Sometimes kids don't pan out for a reason.

I'm not writing anyone off. (Bryant is admittedly developing slower than expected.) Just stating the obvious here; there may be some underlying issues at bay if he was struggling to get in the 2-deep at LSU.

Where some see opportunity others see red flags.

I agree. If he couldn't cut at LSU, chances are he wouldn't cut it here. Tennessee is at a position right now where they can take only elite talent.

If Gavin Bryant is struggling to break through, we know the talent level and expectations for performance are high because he is a very talented football player. Jancek has been quoted repeatedly saying he wants strong, mobile guys that are interchangeable position wise. A big traditional Mike or ILB doesn't seem to fit that description.

Wasn't Bryant in a similar situation?Write him off or nah?

Bryant wasn't a 5 star number 1 LB like Garrett. A 5 star #1 LB shouldn't be behind a walk on if that is true. They should be playing or in the rotation.

Bryant RS made sense considering we had AJ at MLB for most of the yr

Maybe they wanted to RS Garrett. Believe it or not, some teams have enough depth to RS five star players if need be.

And if I remember correctly, Bryant came in way out of shape, which probably contributed to him not contributing toward special teams either. Made complete sense to redshirt him and get him ready for this year.

How is Gavin looking this year? He's going to get playing time right?

The last report I saw from SP was that he was in excellent physical condition, but had more work to do on the playbook/assignments. If he gets that part down he may get some good playing time. The guy is really talented.

So many fans miss the importance of a guy actually having the mental as well as physical ability to play the positions they are recruited to play. In Jancek's system all of the LB's need to be ready to play at least 2 positions to get much playing time (after they have the roster depth they need). With all of the fast paced offenses you can't always sub as you would like, yet, you need to be able to adjust the D scheme/play call to what the O is doing. That's why the big Mike that doesn't play other roles is not being recruited.

I must see the swamp emptying in silence and mark richt's "I can't believe this" smirk, which is a little more fidgety than his "everything is going great" smirk, before I declare we're back

He got better as spring went along. He was still behind others in the mental aspect of MLB spot at end of spring. The pros most anyone says he is the hardest hitter on the team and will be a monster on special teams

Stunned silence at Bryant-Denny Stadium is also an acceptable answer.
