'15 FL DE Byron Cowart

So let me get this straight...Armwood's coach "Shole isn't hongry" ? Or is he?

For Byron Cowart, it's been a long recruitment that finally ended this afternoon, as he signed with the Auburn Tigers. There was drama following his public pledge to Gus Malzahn and his program. After speaking with his coach (Sean Callahan) and mentor (Woodrow Grady) here's the back story that led us through today.

It’s been a long day for Byron Cowart. This five-star defensive end from Seffner (Fla.) Armwood committed to Auburn. It was a dream of his do to it on ESPN and that’s exactly what he did when he picked the Tigers this morning.
However, there is more to this story.
Everyone in the recruiting circles just assumed Cowart was headed to Florida for the longest time. It was his school and close to home. But along the way he grew to love two additional programs – Auburn and Florida State.
People forget that Cowart was at the Iron Bowl in 2013, where Auburn defeated Alabama on Chris Davis’s historic game ending touchdown. That’s the day he first opened up his eyes to Auburn.
That season the Tigers lost to FSU in the national title game. Here’s where the Seminoles come in and where Cowart started paying close attention to the national champions.
Let’s fast forward ahead to this season. Cowart’s plan was to announce his decision on ESPN at the Under Armour All-America Game in early January. He was torn between three schools – Florida, FSU and Auburn. But leading up to that all-star game he thought he had his mind made up. He was going to commit to Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles. That’s the school he was feeling at the time.
But Cowart choose to hold off on his decision knowing he wasn’t quite 100%.
This is when his recruiting world was turned upside down. This was right after Florida and Will Muschamp parted ways. Muschamp finally ended up with the Tigers, landing the defensive coordinator position on the Plains. All the while two other things happened; Cowart was getting to know the new Gator staff and he was trending away from Florida State.
A major battle ensued between the Gators and Tigers. All the while Cowart struggled to come up with a true decision. There’s no question that he has a tremendous relationship with Muschamp and really wanted to play at Auburn. He also felt a strong pull to Gainesville and the Gators.
Cowart simply didn’t know what to do with signing day finally here. He received two sets of Letters of Intent, one from Auburn and one from Florida. Cowart elected to sign both this morning before his scheduled announcement at 9 a.m. It was Cowart that instructed his high school coach, Sean Callahan, to hold both sets of papers until he sorted things out about what future school he would call home.
What people fail to realize is that this kid was truly torn and for very good reasons. He was torn with the idea of being eight hours (Auburn) from home as compared two (Gainesville). This was especially difficult considering how close he and his mom are. It’s always easy to think about yourself going to a school that’s not close to home. But in the end, when it’s crunch time and a decision has to be made, it’s tough to follow through for some. That’s what happened here.
Unjustly, people threw stones at Callahan, saying he held up Cowart’s paperwork. That was simply not the case. It came down to Cowart being comfortable with going to school at Auburn with mom being back in Tampa.
And in the end, it came full circle, as Cowart eventually did fax in his paperwork to Gus Malhazn and the Tigers.
Some kids simply get undone by the process. Some players love the drama. Some recruits can't handle the pressure and make bad choices. In this case, Cowart simply struggled in deciding between two programs, one close to home and one not. In the end, Cowart followed his heart, with mom's blessing, and he's now an Auburn Tiger.

Tons of crap in here especially that he was going to commit to Florida state at Under Armour game.

From his own mouth.

Sorry, am I supposed to believe the story coming from "Saint Callahan" story about how he was just granting "confused" Byron Cowart his special wish to not fax the NLI in? The guy who is a known UF homer coaching at a UF feeder school with his son just recently hired as a coach at UF?

I don't know what McQuay's story is; but I believe 100% that Ol' Callahan is a POS and is salty as **** that he couldn't deliver this kid to Florida. This guy has already gotten in trouble before (stripped of state title, program fined, three year probation) for knowingly playing ineligible players, so he's clearly well adapted to thinking he's above the system.

Imagine what might have been going on with Drew? Nothing perhaps. And I have NO knowledge anything did. But I feel like he was probably pulled in many directions also - and it fits with CBJ's synopsis about recruiting right up to final signing. There is a history there with Hugh in this place isn't it??

Sounds more like a bagman arm wrestling match to me. Spin it how you want it smelled like back room brokering. Which is fine and happens just glad it's over.

I missed the part where Newberg says he (or anyone other than the coach) actually saw both signed LOIs.

Sounds to me like somebody might have helped buy them a house with an implicit understanding that the kid was going to be a Gator. When he wanted to go to Auburn, all hell broke loose.

Probably and especially the FSU part.

Three different analyst have said the same about the two LOI.

Somebody telling tales.

The analyst all got that from the coach. im situations like this the truth tends to fall somewhere in the middle of what the kid and coach says. They both are probably telling half truths or lyingZ

I say that is pretty dang close to how it is, which is why nothing that is being said officially makes any sense.

Does anyone else get the impression an auctioneer was involved here?

I like the idea of a kid taking money from one school and going to another! Not a damn thing they can do about it. Can't really say "but we PAID him". HAHAHAHA!

Didn't Eric Dickerson do that? It was car and not cash IIRC..

This guy and Carl Lawson are going to destroy people. Will make Barnett and Maggitt earn their spot as best DE duo.
