I was wondering about Darr's replacement. I'm so glad we got a punter. We need someone who can turn the field quickly.

He would have had him late in life if that's the case. If the kid was born in 1996, then Ricky would have been like 47 years old.

Ricky Townsend
1972, 1973
Placekicker
Dalton, Ga.

Ricky Townsend's foot propelled him to All-America status his sophomore and junior seasons after he became the Vols' first barefoot placekicker.

"Coach (Bill) Batttle happened to be watching and he said I was kicking better barefooted, so I've done it that way ever since," Townsend once said.

Townsend, a former quarterback and linebacker turned kicker, kicked 33 field goals and 72 extra points in his career for a total of 171 points. His 60 points in 1973 led the Vols in scoring. He also handled kickoff duties, booting long bombs consistently during his tenure.

Still my all time favorite kicker in UT history

I know the numbers can be confusing, but does anyone know off the top if their head his many spots we have left as of right now. I'm sure we will probably have more people leave the team, but I'm just curious where we stand now.

Was Troy Waites a walk on?

I guess he is not living up to standards?

Walk on and I doubt the coaches are really expecting him to be anymore then an emergency back up. I'm not sure the coaches have really seen much from him yet anyway since he is part of the 2014 class.

I think he is a FR walk on. He was rated by "Kohl's Kicking Service" as the 73rd best Punter. Obviously Townsend would be in a different class.

Probably worse then that since that ranking is just for punters that have attended the Kohl's kicking camps. K/P pay to go to the camps and not everyone attends them. Chris Sailer is the other big camp.

Volquest says he also plays safety. Rivals has him as 5th best punter. Just some nuggets of information.

Great pick up by Butch! Just looked at Townsend's Rival profile and he is the 5th rated punter. Too bad that kickers can't get more than 3*s, not that I'm a stargazer or anything.:)

With Darr gone after this season I have always felt a punter would be added if a good one was available. Boom!

Butch has the numbers worked out. Go enjoy your summer. He will not need any assistance from us on how to get a full class done.

Rivals doesn't distinguish between punter and place kicker. If they did Townsend would most likely be rated the #1 or #2 punter instead of #5 kicker overall. Townsend is a pure punter and will not be pulling double duty here like Palardy. I just hope his recruitment doesn't go anything like his brothers who flipped to the Gators on NSD.

I guess I grew accustomed to the 6-4 225-pound Colquitt clan haha! Good point, though, Palardy looked light in the lower body and he was awesome at punting.
Yeah, I played high school ball with the kicker for TCU. Kid came out as a freshman and won the starting job at our high school. He was about 6'0" 125 at the time, just rail thin, and started kicking and our jaws all dropped.

But yeah, generating torque does not require big muscles. Whether it's kicking, throwing a fast ball, hitting a golf ball, etc.

So it looks like as long as UF does not come in with an offer, we should be alright. Mom, Dad, 2 Brothers all gators? Obviously that would be tough to overcome with a UF offer.

Can't wait to see him after spending time with this coaching staff. Palardy's turnaround was amazing and truly impacted the game. Welcome aboard Tommy
