'16 GA DE/TE Isaac Nauta

Look 5* player to me doesn't mean just a good player. IMO if you're a 5 star, then that means you have NFL superstar potential.

I'm not saying Nauta can't be a good player in college. Or even a good player in the NFL.

I just think if you say a kid is a 5* prospect then the kid should be SPECIAL. Right now there's nothing special about this kid. There are a lot of other TEs walking around with his measurable.

That's fair but those services miss as well (Cam Sutton). Pretty much everyone in the football world will disagree about not being special.

Ben Watson, Antonio Gates, Eric Ebron, Vernon Davis, Mike Ditka, John Mackey, Shannon Sharpe, and Ozzie Newsome all have similar measurable. Elite NFL TE's

This is a general statement since I haven't really looked into this kid as he hasn't seemed interested in us, but, I don't think measurables are the only criteria for 5 star status.

Watson, Ebron, Davis, and Sharpe were all 4.4 to 4.5 40 guys. If Nauta is that fast then I take back all my criticism.

But he isn't that fast. He looks like the average 4.7 to 4.8 40 type TE in terms of speed.

I think he's mistaking elite talent for elite measurables. Players can have one without the other.

That being said I haven't paid any attention to whether Nauta has either since he's been such a long shot for us.

Elite talent almost always has elite measurables. It's a fallacy to assume otherwise. The few who play above their physical profile are outliers. They are not the rule.

But it's also a fallacy to assume that elite measurables mean elite talent.

Especially at the college level, there are plenty of players without elite measurables who just have a great feel for the game or football intelligence. Likewise there are plenty of guys who can run like the wind or bench press a small elephant who just aren't that good.

Assuming it takes elite measurables to have elite talent is what gets players like Tyran Matthieu or Johnny Manziel rated as 3* recruits. You've gotta look at a lot more than measurables when evaluating a player.

for what its worth, I agree with you Dobbs. Just seems like a guy that is a HS stud that won't turn into much in college. I'm not saying he's a total scrub or anything like that... but I have no idea what makes this guy a 5-star. I just don't see anything to it.

Thanks. I don't know why everyone is jumping down my throat on this. I've rarely seen 5 star TEs before. So seeing this kid rated as a 5 star at that position is weird to begin with.

Then I see the average size. His body is kinda soft and overweight. Really bizarre why the services love him. Several have him as a top 10 prospect in the country. And I just don't see it at all.

He must have pictures of someone.

Chaney did pretty well with TEs while here. Stocker and Rivera were solid weapons. Then he had Henry at Arky but I think Enos did much better this year than Chaney did with him.

I don't know that any TE should be a 5 star though. I don't recall seeing many. OJ Howard was one and a total mismatch but Bama doesn't use him enough. So his production isn't 5 star worthy. TEs just don't get used enough in pass game at college level to be that high to me

The real question is how good a kicker would have to be to get a five star ranking.

He'd probably have to be money from around 70 yards out or so to get that type of ranking. But even if a kid could hit 80% percent from that far in there would be people who'd be opposed to a kicker getting a five star ranking.

Granted, a leg like that would revolutionize the game and make it so an offense basically only has to get to around midfield to score, so maybe it would be a no brainer.

He would also have to be committed to Bama

Hmmmm, well maybe those guys who get paid to evaluate players know a little more than you do. You know the same ones who have evaluated Dobbs and given him praise are the same ones you are questioning now. Maybe thats it. Or maybe your ability to judge talent is just insanely better than them.

I wonder which scenario is more likely?

They both do look high potential players. However, I think/hope dawgs struggle a little this year with the new staff. We gotta win the East next year because it will get a lot harder the years after IMO

Why is that? You think Kirby, Muschamp, and Jim "Velveeta teeth" McElwain are going to be dominating the SEC East? I don't think so.

I think Kirby Smart is going to make Mark Richt's recruiting efforts look amateurish. I wish Richt was still in Athens.

I don't think that they will make the SEC east any easier. Jmo I think they will do better than some, on here, think.
