Three-star senior defensive tackle Marlon Dunlap of West Charlotte (N.C.) High School was one of the more intriguing prospects who attended UT’s open practice. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Dunlap said he picked up an offer from the Vols a couple months ago, and they’re one of the “main two” teams he’s considering, along with North Carolina, following his first trip to Knoxville over the weekend. Louisville and West Virginia are among the other schools pursuing Dunlap, and he believes more teams — including Florida, which has shown interest in him — could enter the picture this fall now that his academic situation has improved a bit. With Tennessee still looking for another defensive tackle in the 2016 class, Dunlap is an interesting name to keep in mind.

so funny seeing people freak out bc he doesnt have stars yet. But then 5 months from now when the kid is a known name with alot of offers those people are nowhere to be found. The reason he has been off the map is bc of grades. That seems to be improving.

He was here and we are checking on that situation and have been since Saturday. I'll see if I can get an update from a few people later this week.

Never a bad idea to get in on a kid that has grade issues but potential either. You may end up recruiting them again in a couple of years.

“Marlon is a relentless player – aggressive,” said Andrew Jordan, who was recently promoted from assistant coach to head coach. “He has the ability to put pressure on the quarterback and stop the run. He commands a double-team just about every pass play on the high school level – he’s hard to block one-on-one. He’s probably going to play three-technique on the collegiate level, but he has the feet and agility to play end or even standup a little bit as an outside linebacker."

”(Linebackers) coach (Tommy) Thigpen is recruiting me. He’s a good coach and he’s all about helping his players.”

This kid is no back up plan. Hes a beast inside much like tuttle. Easily a high 4 star with grades in order and top 10 in nc in a very top heavy class in nc

Just talked with Charlotte, N.C., defensive tackle Marlon Dunlap who visited Tennessee this past weekend. Dunlap said he made the trip because Tennessee offered earlier this summer and he and Tommy Thigpen have been getting to know each other.

He visited with his mom, dad and little brother and now calls Tennessee a 'legitimate contender' after the visit. North Carolina is also someone sticking out to him as he's visited there four times and feels like that staff is family.

He said he will try and be back in Knoxville for an unofficial visit for the Georgia game. He could be someone that blows up this fall as Mississippi State, Michigan State and Florida have all increased their attention recently.

The word on 247 was that his grades were the reason his amount of attention was lacking before recently, as noted in the quote within my post above. Apparently, he is a very good player, but as most of us know, if your grades are lacking and such is well known by the public, your rating will suffer.

“i feel like it’s high on my list. It’s up there with carolina. I feel like those two are basically my main two right now. I love those two teams right there, man.”

“they were telling me that, but i probably wouldn’t have believed it,” said dunlap, who also claims offers from west virginia, east carolina, charlotte and georgia southern. “they were like, ’40,000 are going to be there just for practice.’ i was like, ‘oh, ok.’ i didn’t really think much of it until i went out there.

“when we went out there, man — everybody goes out there to support their team. They love their team. They’re all volunteers.”

This guy is definitely legit and not a back-up plan. Kid's very talented and I'm glad he's been doing work to get his grades in order. Should continue to blow up in recruiting as his grades were the main concern. Strong class up top this year in NC, and he's solidly in that group imo.

Marlon Dunlap seems to have emerged as a real target for Tennessee and they made a huge impression on him last weekend while he was in town. Dunlap lists North Carolina and Tennessee as his top two and while he has the stronger relationship with Carolina at this point, it would be unwise to count out Tommy Thigpen in this race as he's the head recruiter for Dunlap. Look for Dunalp back in Knoxville for the Georgia game.

Elsewhere on the defensive line, Tennessee recently turned up the heat on Marlon Dunlap out of Charlotte, N.C. Tennessee is very much in the mix there and will host him this fall for a visit.
