He is responsible for some of their recent recruiting success. He's already nabbed a 5 star DT and another 4 DT. I know they've had less than stellar talent since Sumlin left, so this is kind of uncharted territory for Houston in terms of recruiting. Sumlin was recruiting well for UH, but not this well and not this well so early. I think he's going to be another great coach. Perhaps even better than Briles & Sumlin...which is scary. Who knows. Time will tell.

Why the heck do people say Sumlin is a great coach? He is a defensive coach, and TAMs defense has completely sucked since he has been there.

No he isnt. He played defense in college but he's only coached O in his career.

Kazee and Barnum both signed here right? Kazee kicked off and Barnum left. We haven't had much luck with Texas kids. McNeil is the only one that comes to mind as sticking around. Surely I'm forgetting a few though.

When I first saw Phillips commitment, my first thought was that we would have trouble keeping him once the Texas schools offered. But given the "terse" announcement on his Twitter, I think it was CBJ who encouraged him to look around. Given that we will only take 18-20 in the 2016, spots will be tough and competitive. He is a good athlete and will find a home where he can have success. Best of luck to him.
