'17 MS RB Cam Akers (FSU commit 12/27)

Dude, I know sometimes hearing facts that aren't in UT's favor sucks. It's just reality man. If we would have taken care of USC and Vandy we would have landed a couple of bluechips. Don't be mad at me, be mad at the coaching staff or team that didn't get it done
Akers was never going to go to UT. Getting mad and blaming the staff about that is completely asinine. He wants to play in a pro style offense. He has said this over and over again. It was the biggest indicator of where he was going. CRG is the ONLY reason he even really considered UT, so give the *****ing a rest. This class is not great, but it is solid. It is not some 28th ranked coach killer. We will have to do better. If we don't you will get your wish and we will be on to the next future head coach you will eventually hate.

That's a good point. There could be another one in there somewhere. But I said "seems"." And right now, it seems there's no one besides Chandler we can point at in this class and realistically expect to make a be a player who can change games for us in 2017.

IMO stars aren't important. I said before that I think we have some guys with good upside. But most of the guys in this class don't project to make an impact for at least another season or so. And with 2017 looking to be such a vital year for Butch, you'd hope he'd have been able to bring more aboard.

I feel better about this class than I did a month ago, but not before the season. Before the season, I figured we'd have a trip to Atlanta to help land a few more studs. I think we've added some good players since the season ended. But they're all guys who will need time to adjust to SEC play. Also, positions of need are important. We've added some nice players, but many of them are at spots where we have lots of upperclassmen or older players they'll likely be stuck behind.

I'm hoping Butch can turn things around, but he needs to add a few studs who can contribute immediately at some positions like DT and CB and thus far this class we've struck out on our targets. It doesn't bode well.

DT I agree on. Butler and Crosby can play, but it will be a couple of years till they can contribute. Crosby has the potential to have the more immediate impact, but Butler will be the better player in the long run maybe. But it is really almost impossible to find true FR that can play many meaningful snaps there anyway. There are probably only two to three guys in any recruiting class that can at DT. I actually think Shamwow and LaBruzza can play at CB, but we needed Corker too. Losing that one did suck, but I sure didn't think he was worth two roster spots. All in all...this class is a disappointment...I agree. It is not what it could have been, but considering the disaster the season was...It really is nowhere near as bad as it could be either. So in summation, the staff gets blame for botching a great opportunity...BUT...they also get credit for not letting it be a complete disaster.

You do know this years heisman trophy winner (Lamar Jackson) was 3*/4* according to every service and wasn't even in most sites top 300 prospects overall.

The 5* top ranked QBs of that class were Blake Barnett and Kyler Murray. Both guys have already had to transfer and barely played.

Recruiting rankings are not even close to being infallible. I'm pretty sure the best player from this class will ultimately be some 3 star nobody is talking about.

Just for your info here is Alabama roster for upcoming bowl game. This is according to 247 composite:
Offense
WR - ArDarius Stewart - 95 4 star
WR - Calvin Ridley - 99 5 star
LT - Cam Robinson - 99 5 star
LG - Ross Pierschbacher - 96 4 star
C - Bradley Bozeman - 87 3 star
RG - Korren Kirven - 92 4 star
RT Jonah Williams - 98 5 star
Defense (this is just plain scary)
DE - Jonathon Allen - 99 5 star
NG - Da'Ron Payne - 98 5 star
DE - Dalvin Tomlinson - 91 4 star
LB - Tim Williams - 96 4 star
LB - Ryan Anderson - 94 4 star
LB - Reuben Foster - 99 4 star
LB - Shaun Hamilton - 91 4 star
DB - Marlon Humphrey - 99 5 star
DB - Minkah Fitzpatrick - 98 5 star
DB - Ronnie Harrison - 91 4 star
DB - Tony Brown - 99 5 star

Nick Saban doesn't beat you on gameday. He wins in February. That lineup should beat anybody in the country.

RF using Bozeman as an example of the "stars don't matter argument" in 3...2...1...

That's fair.

I think we can all agree that there was potential for the wheels to completely fall off with this class after the way the season ended and the coaches deserve some credit for stopping that from happening.

Hopefully they can somehow land Bray. Doing that would end things on a nice note. Not really crossing my fingers there though. Hard to expect us to beat Saban for an instate kid at the top of his board.

If he's not on the hot seat, it's likely due to the astronomical buyout even after next year, and not results.

Serious question. Who do you think he is on the hot seat with? This message board is completely irrational and very few on here matter to the university. There is no AD. He can't even hire assistants right now I don't believe. I don't know any big donors who are out of control mad or have him on a clock. The media is happy just to whip up the flames among those of us who don't matter. So where is the heat coming from?

Whatever this means...

Think it isn’t affecting recruiting? [Not having an AD in place] Think again. Both Yusef Corker and Cam Akers at points as recent as this week were considered heavy Vols’ leans --- though instability at the top as much as anything were factors. We’re also told the Akers’ situation, “just got too messy.”

- 247 (Brice)

Hubbs on Nashville radio this morning talking about Akers essentially said it came down to feeling like he had a better chance to play earlier at FSU and that Jimbo (with the new contract) having stability looked more appealing than the scrutiny surrounding Jones at this point.

Come on Brice...When was Akers ever a "heavy Vol lean?"

Ax to grind

Yep. Clearly doing some ax grinding in this article. 247 encourages that stuff IMO.

Akers is a heavy Vol lean this week and Vincent Perry can't pass his classes because he isn't playing baseball. Kyle Phillips isn't any good so we will probably whiff on the 3* WR from Hillsboro with UT being his best offer by far. And we are now missing on recruits because we don't have an AD.

It is not a weak class. That is stupid. It is a disappointing class because of the potential for greatness that was there, but it is still a solid class. There are over 100 teams and UT will finish in the top 15-20% of those teams. That is not weak.

Ugh. Compare our class to SEC and then rest of P5.

Do the group of 5 teams really matter?

I'm confused. Where did I say he's on the hotseat? My underlying point was that his buyout may be keeping him off. Declaring someone on a hotseat is such a subjective thing. The consensus is that he is, but you are correct, it's impossible to know the internal machinations in the AD right now.

We were always 3rd or 4th at BEST. His relationship with RG was always way over blown IMO. Lots of hope, but was never happening. Kid is a baller and will do well at FSU.

It was said by those in the know such as Hubbs and Brice we were 2nd, so saying this dumb **** definitively is why guys like you Bruin and catbum get ridiculed so much. I'd hate to think I was wrong everytime I tried to communicate with the outside world. To each is their own though.

If a recruit doesn't pick UT because there isnt an AD in place I will eat my hat. Give me a break.

Not directly but usually when a new AD comes in, and a sport isn't where he feels it should be, he makes changes

You know that Akers heard this to no end from opposing coaches

I doubt it, all the opposing coaches had to do was say, "read twitter" do you want to play for those clowns who will turn on you on a dime?

This. And from Hubbs comments it sounds stability at the HC position played a part.
