At the time of this writing, Butler is a mere hours away from announcing his commitment, likely to Tennessee. We think whoever he picks is getting a really high upside kid that we expect to grow into a defensive tackle. I've loved his athleticism since seeing camp clips of him in the spring and this week he backed up strong senior film with a strong week of practice. He's now a four-star with a 91 rating.
Trey Smith, Maleik Gray and Ty Chandler are the bell cows of the Tennessee recruiting class and for good reason.
Theyre big-time guys with bright futures in Knoxville.
But you can make an argument that Wednesdays verbal from four-star defensive lineman Matthew Butler is the most pivotal in the class.
The Vols have struggled mightily at the point of attack with injuries and inconsistent play. Theres still plenty of talent up front in 2017 and Butler immediately bolsters the group, a versatile guy that can be a disruptive presence across the front. 247Sports is higher on Butler than our peers, ranking his as the nation's No. 16 defensive tackle while he checks in at No. 34 per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.
Butler chose to play for Tennessee over offers from the likes of South Carolina, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Penn State and Miami.
Long-term, I love the 6-foot-4, 265-pound Butler as a three technique. An explosive player that can quickly shoot the gap, bring a pass rush presence from the interior, a tackle for loss machine on first and second down as well. Butler had 44 tackles for loss and 26 sacks as a senior playing on the edge but has the frame to grow into one of the better three-techniques in college football.
His stats for 2016 on 247 can't be right can they? 26 sacks???

Really, honestly, theyve been my leader since the summer, Butler told 247Sports Adam Rowe earlier this week before publicly announcing his decision. Ive been on tons and tons and tons of college campuses, and I never, ever said under my breath or to myself at all, This is the place I want to be.
But on my second visit to Tennessee, after being coached by (defensive line) coach (Steve) Stripling and seeing (head) coach (Butch) Jones speak to my parents and tell them whats going on at Tennessee he wasnt, like, recruiting my parents. He was telling them what was going on at Tennessee. Do you believe in me or not? is essentially what he was inferring with what he was saying. I said under my breath, This is a place I could be.
And since that moment, I was like, Yeah, this is probably the place Im going to end up. So after all kinds of talks with my parents and other visits, there was no reason for me not to go to Tennessee. There was no factor in any other school that said, Wow, I cant go to Tennessee. I have to go here. But at Tennessee, there was.
It was just something about Tennessee, just because of the coaching, the passion behind the coaching and just the way that he was just speaking to my parents that I appreciated. I didnt commit right then. I put a whole lot of thought into it really, like, five months of thought into it and now Im committing.
I see the talent thats coming to Tennessee, said Butler, whos ranked by 247Sports as the nations No. 251 overall prospect and No. 16 defensive tackle in the 2017 class. I see the talent thats at Tennessee. Ive followed them throughout the season. Ive seen their ups and downs, and I feel like it is correctable and an SEC title is attainable.
The coaching there can develop players, and, along the defensive front, I believe Coach Stripling just needs the players. And the guys coming in, were ready to be coached. And once he coaches us, we can be a very dominant defensive front. (Defensive coordinator Bob) Shoop knows what hes doing as far as scheme, and Coach Jones, hes very interactive with the players, as Ive been observing lately. Hes very adamant about the program.
Theres a potential for kind of anybody to grow into an inside player, said Butler, who plans to enroll at Tennessee in June. But theyre starting me off at end because my transition from defensive tackle to defensive end (this year) was very smooth. My knee bend and hands and length all are suited to defensive end.
But if I get bigger, then I can play a big end, some defensive tackle, cause some matchup problems. I just want to be utilized correctly and utilized for my most favorable outcome.
My defensive line coach, he always says, If you get $1 million playing defensive tackle, then play defensive tackle. And if you get $1 million playing end, you play defensive end. Thats kind of how I look at it.
