'18 FL DT Nesta Silvera

Maybe you didn't watch this past season. Experience doesn't make one a good football player.
Our run defense was number 59 in the country while it’s not great it’s still pretty decent. Another year of experience makes a world of difference. Plenty of good Dlineman usually take a few years to reach their full potential

We have like 4 defensive tackles coming back with experience why is this considered a position of need?

I don't disagree that we have returning production, but I think the fact that Matthew Butler was called upon to play such an insane number of snaps suggests that even though we have several other DT's on the roster, the staff may not have enormous faith in them.

Butler was logging wild snap counts throughout the season. In several games he played 80+ snaps. That's not a great sign for the rotation.

I think Simmons could be a legitimately good player, but injuries impacted his conditioning (which has been a continual struggle for him), which limited his impact.

Considering our discrepancy in time of possession, the need to keep DL fresh, and the injury rate of linemen I'm kinda feeling like you've already answered your own question.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But if you still need more explanation, our DLs that led the team in tackles are:
Matthew Butler - 47
Jay Blakely - 29
Omari Thomas - 21
Da'Jon Terry - 19
Caleb Tremblay - 18
Kurott Garland - 16
Elijah Simmons - 11
Aubrey Solomon - 8 (6 against TN Tech)

Butler, Blakely, and Tremblay (3 of the top 5) were all "Super Seniors" and out of eligibility. Solomon clearly fell out of favor w/CRG and hasn't confirmed if he'll return and use his extra year of eligibility.

The current recruiting class has just 2 DL commitments. Last year's class had just 1.

Right so 4 experienced guys returning with guys like Dom Bailey, Phillips and West added. That’s 6-7 guys on the depth chart depending on West’s position and only two can play at a time seems like the rotation is fine right now…

Our front 7 is horrible. We lack depth, especially quality depth. Nobody on the DL is a standout we need any help on the DL we can get. The kids coming in will be freshman, I’d rather not rely on them

Who said anything about DE? We’re talking about DT depth. Our rush defense was ranked 59th in the country let’s not exaggerate that as “horrible” with 4 guys with experience returning and 3 other guys included into the mix that seems like a good rotation

It's like I've just explained to a child why the Atlantic Ocean is a large body of water using exact figures of depth, width, and volume and he responds with, "Right so only about 4 inches across here on this globe, so pretty small, really."

It’s almost like you disregard other areas of need on the roster and our apparent numbers crunch, why waste a scholly on a one year guy when we have plenty returning that makes no sense

We need that scholly this year though is my point, we have other needs

I guess somebody forgot to tell Coaches Heupel and Banks that then. Seems odd that they wouldn't know that we have "4 experienced" DTs already (whatever the F that's supposed to mean) and continue to go after tackles like Moten and Jenkins.

Morten and Jenkins are not one year rentals that is the difference

1. That's def. not a certainty anymore, for any recruit.
2. And even if true, they'd also take up more than 1 year of a scholarship.

But hey, here's the my original post that caused you to chime in.

All being equal, I think I'd rather have Moten who could be developed over a 1-year player, but he is an all ACC honorable mention at a position of need. Could be a plug-and-play to fill Butler's spot.

But if you want to think that the 59th ranked run defense losing both starters and 3 of it's top 5 tackles doesn't create a position need, you do you, sport.

I mean the staff seems to think like me considering we are not even pursuing this guy so yeah…

You just stated 3 posts above that we should pass on Nestera because we need the scholly for other areas this year. Are you under the impression that Jenkins and Moreno are walking on this year? Stop digging.

We honestly need DTs, LBs, and DBs. The next two recruiting classes and portals need to be great if we want to be actual contenders within the next 5 years.
Whoever we do or don’t land won’t be here in 5 years.
