I don't think we are "struggling" as much as you think. We have landed some big time DEs. We are landing one or two this year. We mist likely add another really good player at the position this year too.
Davis- hard to beat bama, esp when mama wants them.
Ojulari- hard to beat the instate school when they have a good recruiter.
Only so many out there that are consensus top guys. We have two committed.
Imo, big time guys are those that we are fighting off top schools to sign. Not a guy that yeah, GA has offered, but he was their back up plan in case Ojulari went elsewhere. Emerson, Lawless, Litaker and others are big time guys because we had to beat out the Bama's and Clemsons of the world to land them. That's what Davis and Ojulari are. Just because a guy has a Bama offer, doesn't mean it's a committable offer as everyone knows. That's not to say that some of these guys can't be big time players also. Carvin and Horn for instance seem to be Bama's back up plans. I'd love to add them to the class, but I don't think any of us put Carvin on the same level as Mays. To me, DE is so important that we need to land the top guys at that position if we want to be an elite football team. Let's face it, without Barnett last year we lose to Florida and Ga.
I think Butler stays at end. He's working some at tackle because of depth concerns at that position. When you add the guys we have coming in next season, especially if Emerson ends up at DT, it only makes since for Butler to be a full time DE that can move inside in special packages.
Bass is right: the Vols missed on all of their top defensive end targets in 2017, including the kid out of Crisp County, Georgia who ended up at Florida (Carter?). If I remember correctly, the staff was also high on a kids from Virginia Beach and South Carolina.
Swanson is right: Butch revamped the coaching staff to improve recruiting-- and Wells is cleaning up in-state. The Vols might have a two year gap of elite rushers in the 2016-2017 classes, but the staff can make up for it by coaching the high upside guys they did land.
