'18 PA JUCO OL Jahmir Johnson (UT signee)

He's very light for someone projecting at the left tackle position. He'd be better off redshirting and immersing himself in the S&C program. He certainly could put on 15 or 20 pounds (or more) this summer, but assuming he's a natural athelete with no "enhancements", a lot of the weight he'll put on will be fat and his conditioning will be compromised. He's better off working out like a beast in the weightroom, improving speed and agility, focusing on strength gains, ensuring diet and nutrition is on point while maintaining a caloric surplus, and coming into next season a much bigger and well conditioned athlete.

He can't redshirt but he has 3 years to play so he just needs to be ready in case someone gets injured.

true. he's a depth player immediately, that's probably it. see how he develops after that.

I always unintentionally forget about this guy.

273 is small. Hopefully he has quick feet and long arms. We have a long summer and it’s doubtful he’s a day one starter so he can keep trying to put on size during the season and should be a legit 290 later in the season should we need him for depth.

If he’s that small now, he probably won’t be playing much this fall.

Even up to 290 by camp, he’s gonna drop weight in camp.

Adding 15-20 pounds of weight in 2-3 months is easy. Muscle is another story.

In 60 days, that’s around an 1,100 calorie surplus daily, and water weight accumulated with actual tissue mass. A killer milkshake has that alone.

Depending on his daily energy expenditure, he probably needs about 5,000 calories today to hit that goal.

Would be killer fun

Couple of those killer milkshakes a day and a few peanut butter sandwiches before bed and he'll be 300lbs by Aug 1.

I thought he looked kind of slim in his commitment video, but if he’s only 273 right now, I doubt he’s able to contribute this year. Hopefully we stay healthy up front and he can be ready next year.

Yep. Had him pegged as our starting LG. After reading that post I'm now thinking Johnson or Locklear.

Juco guys are aupposed to be immediately ready. If not we shouldn't recruit them. Maybe he plays stronger than his size and is ready to go

He's got 3 years. A little different than most juco players.

True. Good point

Just thought I would note the exact day and time that hell froze over.

I don't think 15 to 20 pounds is unheard of over a summer. I don't think he's gonna be the starter at LT anyway so he likely has more time than just the summer. Also, I think he has 3 years of eligibility left.

Agree he’s not likely to be starting at LT soon. He does have 3 years of eligibility, so it’s not a huge issue. But still somewhat disappointing that we have a JUCO OL coming in who needs to add 20 pounds or so before he’ll be in a position to contribute.

It doesn't look like that will be the norm though. It's okay to do that from time to time if most of what you bring in doesn't have that issue. Which judging by our current class and future offers, guys that need to add weight when they get here will be few and far between. We just are beat down because the last 5 years of OL/every position recruiting has been the opposite.

I kind of thought that he would have been at least 290 by now...it’s been nearly 4 months since signing day. Come on man!

EDIT: he’s been signed since 12/27/2017, checking in at 6’5 275lbs~. 5 months to add 20-25 pounds doesn’t seem like it’d be difficult to do if you were putting forth some effort...just saying.
