this same crap was said about dools saying year 0 n fans saying they cant wait till his class are juniors and seniors n we will be competeing....... well they r junior n seniors n fans r saying they sux so now lets wait 4 more years...at some point a blend of young n old players have to step up n win

not directing at u photo but every team n sec play freshman.. todays freshman=new sophomores

To be fair the freshmen that UT fans were excited about in Dooley's first year, had they stayed and been under a quality coaching staff, would have lit it up in Year 3 combined with the other guys Dooley brought in that were FR in Year 2.

Bray, James, Hunter, Da'Rick, Maggitt, Johnson, etc.

I don't think Jones' position is really much different. We lost a lot of players to discipline issues that couldn't be predicted over Dooley's years and they largely suffered under a poor coaching staff, especially the D in Year 3.

So, I don't think optimism for FR this year to develop into very good players by Year 3. I think that's what you were saying... your grammar made it hard to really grasp.

Butch is going to play 18 or more because we should be up big on AP and this is a good game to get the freshman some game speed reps. We don't have the depth issues of the past...that's not why we're playing so many freshman.

If we were STARTING 18 freshman Saturday, that would be cause for worry.

not sure what the problem is. This should be an easy game, and you would expect to see alot of young guys getting experience. Its not the same as Dooleys first year where he was forced to start alot of Freshmen. If Butch wanted to he could probably get by with only playing 4 or 5.

The depth chart has been released, and there are just 5 true freshmen in the 2-deep. I'm pretty sure so many freshmen will play because it's Austin Peay, not because of depth issues.

You're 50% right. There are definitely serious depth issues on this team. He will get experience for 18 freshmen vs an early patsy because their contributions will be needed going forward. DBs and WRs head the list.

Good, get them in there and let them play. We are going to need them next year anyway when we lose so many. I would go buck wild with my rotations this year because we are going to need all of the experience we can muster for next year.

He'll play the freshmen not because he's writing off this year in anticipation of next year IMHO. He's playing them because they are more talented and they give him a better chance to win this year with some game experience. I don't think there's any chance he sells this team with these seniors short in any way by "playing for the future". I'm thinking his sole thought is how do I squeeze the absolute most out of the roster I have to get this team bowl eligible. Unfortunately for him at this point, he's gonna have to play freshmen this year cause they give the team a better chance to win.

Tennessee is probably the only SEC school where 18 true freshman would be able to see playing time immediately. Vol fans can now understand the problems facing coach Jones and the football program. In several years we should be able to greatly improve our talent and depth so that we can indeed compete with the top SEC teams. As hard as it is to do, Vol fans must be patient and give coach Jones time to level the playing field.
Go Vols

This time I don't see it, other then the players we lost on offense last year, which were substantial. We have lost very few players. I think they may in fact be better then the #20 ranking for recruiting. Other then that, we actually do have more depth then we had 3 years ago.

He said today that he expects to play between 10-16 freshman.

I think you'll see

Malik Foreman
Cam Sutton
Devon Swafford
Josh Smith
Marquez North
Dylan Weisman
Paul Harris
Ryan Jenkins

Possibly
Jason Carr
Riley Ferguson
Jaylen Miller
Malik Brown
Josh Dobbs
Lemond Johnson

After listening to Jones' pc today, I don't think either freshman QB will play this year unless Worley sucks or gets hurt.

Very unlikely they burn the RS of either Fr. Fr DB's will play if they get opportunity to stick them in. Most of that second list either doesn't play or only plays in mop up or ST's.

This team needs all the experience it can get. I expect to see the starters for most of the game.

Jones has the choice and leisure to play several of those guys to get them prepared for bigger roles. That has not always been the case over the past several years. Fr had to play early because there was no one else.

BTW, UGA will start true freshmen at CB and one of the S spots. The Fr S is backed up by a Fr. Three of their 4 back up LB's are Fr.

At some positions maybe. But if they have anyone they want to try at CB... you'll see them if there's a chance. IIRC, they have said they like to play 7 or 8 on the OL. We'll see a boat load of guys at WR.

Cha-ching!

He has the luxury in most positions of work the Fr in or using them on ST's.

Look at it this way. These freshmen will be depth and experienced in the next 2-3 years. Much like this year's OL 4 years ago.

If week 1 were at Oregon and we were planning to play 18 freshmen, I'd be worried. The actual situation worries me not one bit.

According to depth chart we are only "Starting" 3 freshmen.
Up to 18 could see "Playing time". Big distinction between starting and playing.

In DD's first year I believe he "Started" 187 freshmen, or something close to that. :)
