It was a really good experience. Different, Bennett Jr. told VolQuest. It was good to be up there with a bigger group and see some of the 2019 class and some of the other recruits that who Tennessee is recruiting and who all could be there potentially.
Coach Pruitt wanted to introduce himself to my dad and spoke with him to lay eyes on him, said Bennett Jr., adding that his dad came down from Washington D.C. for the trip. Bennett, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound outside linebacker who moved to Nashville last August, got longer look at Tennessees academic opportunities.
We got more information, a better understanding how they go about themselves with academics, he said. I want to major in political science, pre-law. They have a good program, and I looked at their websites and they have a good undergraduate process for who they help their students who want to major in that area.
I spoke with coach Rumph individually and we had some good talks. We went through one of their base plays on defense and how Id be used, he said. He drew on the board, Xs and Os, teaching us the defense and breaking it down.
Bennett plans to return to Tennessee later this summer, and he has upcoming visits planned for Memphis, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Purdue and Georgia Tech.
the three-star junior linebacker from battle ground academy in franklin, tenn., said tennessee is still number one among the 10 schools that have extended offers to him, and the vols made him feel at home saturday during his visit for their junior day. it honestly felt really good. It felt really good to get back up there, said bennett. im very blessed with all the offers. But, like i said in the beginning, tennessee is still number one.
the 6-foot-3, 200-pound bennett said his father accompanied him on the trip to knoxville last weekend, and he admitted the idea of committing to tennessee at least briefly crossed his mind while he was there.
it did cross my mind, but it was smart (to wait), said bennett, who picked up an offer from tennessee on jan. 27 during his first visit with the vols. (my father) said to just go ahead and wait, and if thats really where i want to go. Then early summer is where im looking to. its really just what i feel like is the best fit for me. Its also, like, the gut (feeling) and what my faith, what god is telling me is the right thing to do and what i think is best for me. thats the way i see it, and right now hes kind of telling me its tennessee.
i like coach rumph. I like him a lot, bennett said. hes real cool. He really appreciated the way i spoke and the way i carried myself, and he helped me a lot. In the classroom, when he was drawing up plays and stuff like, basic plays i really enjoyed that. It was just exciting to learn some plays from a coach like him.
the way he was explaining it, it showed that i would come up. I would kind of line up in a defensive-end position, but standing up literally, exactly what i play now and sometimes i would drop into coverage, like, in a cover 3 or in a hook, bennett said. it was good to show what i would be able to play.
the big thing he told me was that he understood my excitement that i had coming back from my first tennessee visit, bennett said, referring to his father. "he understood the energy and the way it is. Just the environment itself, he finally understood what i was talking about, and he said he felt it as well. He got excited himself. and that was, like, his second time being there, because the first time was literally when he dropped off his sisters for college.
Having only played one year of defense thus far, he's probably pretty raw. Still, he has great size, speed, and athleticism.
I know we will be in on a lot of more "highly rated" players, but I'll put this kid down as one of my early favorites. Hope he's a part of this class some way, some how. Might need a to redshirt his first year just to get bigger and get more coaching, but by all accounts he has a ton of potential. Being homegrown, and the backstory of his dad being a Vols diehard just makes it all the sweeter.
have things cooled with this kid ? Seemed like the staff was pretty high on him. Maybe waiting to see what he does in camps this summer leading into the fall ?
The three-star linebacker from Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tenn., has been high on Tennessee since getting an offer from the Vols in January, and he has referred to them as his leader at times. He has been on a couple more visits to Tennessee since then, most recently attending the Vols spring game on April 21, and he admitted after the visit that they remained up at the top of his list. But he also said Virginia, which hosted him Saturday, and Georgia Tech were the teams recruiting him hardest. Bennett, whos coming off December shoulder surgery, said last week that he could decide on a college by the end of May. But it remains to be seen whether Tennessee will make a strong push for him.
