I'm not sure we're on the same page here. It's not so much that I'm worried about not having guys who fit the physical profile of what Pruitt likes to do up front. It's the talent level that worries me.

Looking at the heights and weights of the guys we'll have on campus next year and saying they fit the physical profile isn't necessarily the same as having guys who can perform at a high level for us. Having 3-4 guys who fit the physical profile to a T doesn't mean a thing if only one of them can play at a high level.

Well that's hard to know right now. All I can speculate is we have guys that fit the physical profile. We won't know until they get out there if they will perform. My original post was responding to poster who seemed to have the assumption that a nt has to be 330 lbs which isn't true in this system really. And the post you responded to here was my response to yer question about knowing if Pruitt will run 4 2 5 or if that was based on our limited personnel. Based on Pruitt and Shearer's recent history I believe we can assume a lot of nickle and dime 4 man fronts in addition to a base 3 4. As far as talent, we will have some guys who should fit the profile and hopefully they have talent and are coachable enough to contribute.

Also, I look for butler to contribute in his role... Seems a lot bigger.

We definitely need him to take a step. I was hoping he'd maybe make up some ground on and push our other DEs a bit more in the spring.

He's got a lot of football ahead of him, though. Hopefully he can capitalize on 2018, be a contributor, and get some experience that will help him out in 2018.

TBF, all that guy said was that Emerson will be a 3-4 DE. You inferred the rest on your own.

You're probably right on scheme. The point I was trying to make (and I didn't do a good job of conveying) is that what we see schematically this year might not be 100% what Pruitt and Sherrer in the future. To some extent (hard to know what extent exactly) they're going to have to adapt to what they have in 2018.

As far as the players, I agree that is the hope. I'm not sold on some of the guys who figure to be depth players for us in 2018, though. Hopefully the coaches can get a lot out of them.

Yeah I guess I inferred that based on it being his response to me saying emerson could play nt at 300 lbs. And the next poster saying he could get to 315+. I stand by all my assumptions though. Haha

Have a story coming out on Smiley. He wants to get up for Tennessse soon. Says Vols are among the schools recruiting him the hardest. Definitely will OV here in the fall.

He apparently wanted a cheesy, cartoonish, MS Paint-lookin’ edit, bc I think he hit up that volrecruiting98 dude. Oh well. Seems like a hard vol lean at the moment tho.

Did you do an edit for him or have any info?

Probably a top 5 or something. Impressive stats and film (from what my non-scouting eyes can tell). Plus he's from Chesapeake, where I lived for 18 years.

In fact, I'm heading up there next weekend. I'll see if I can track him down and report back what hoodie he's wearing that particular day, or if he has team wristbands on. Idk... maybe even yell "Go Vols" from across a parking lot. Because recruiting. I'm here to help. You're welcome.

Ben Smiley has only visited Virginia and South Carolina, but the 4-star defensive lineman from Indian River (Va.) plans on changing that this summer. After his performing at the Nike Opening Regional in Charlotte, Smiley told VolQuest that Tennessee is among the schools contacting him the most right now and he hopes to make his first trip to Rocky Top “real soon.”

“The Vols have been recruiting me hard for a while now,” Smiley said. “I talk to the coaches all the time, I feel real love from Tennessee. I’m in a hurry to just get up there. Sometime soon, I got to get up there.” On Sunday, Smiley is set to release his Top 10 schools, and the Vols will definitely make the cut.

The 6-foot-4, 265-pound defensive lineman holds two dozen offers, mainly from Big 10 and ACC schools. South Carolina and Tennessee jumped into the mix in January, hoping to make a move with the Tidewater native. Smiley said most of his contact with Tennessee has been from head coach Jeremy Pruitt and area recruiter Brian Niedermeyer. He’s also touched base with defensive line coach Tracy Rocker and his favorite player happens to be a recent Tennessee legend.

“I love Derek Barnett,” Smiley said, unprompted. “He went there and dominated. That just makes me feel like that’s a school I could play at and get better like he did. He’s quick off the ball, he uses his hands and he makes a play almost every time.”

Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Boston College and North Carolina are schools recruiting Smiley the hardest currently, mainly as a “versatile guy who can play outside or inside.” “Most schools are recruiting me as a rotational guy across the line. Not just one spot,” he added. While Smiley hopes to visit Tennessee soon, he will definitely be on campus in the fall in an official capacity. “They’ll definitely get one of my five official visits,” he said.
