This is not the first nor the last time overconfidence has humbled us to the core. In November of 1969 the 3rd ranked undefeated Vols went into Oxford and laid a 38-0 egg in the Archie Who game. The good news is that we learned our lesson and the next year won the Sugar Bowl and finished #4 in the nation.

I was a student at UT then. We were just as shocked then as we were Sat nite. That game was a 38 point difference and this one was only 25. Playing for a chance to play for a national title was common to both games. And we were an established elite program in 69, not a one year wonder.

So was I, a sophomore. It was total shock just like now. Hopefully this only happens every 53 years.

I was a 4 year old Vol Fan !!! GBO
I was on an all expense paid trip to S.E. Asia courtesy of Uncle Sam. In all seriousness I would like to point out three things, (1) We do not have CBs. They are safeties that hit pretty darn hard. That is the reason we are good at stopping the run. If a wr gets a step on them they cannot catch up. Thus they give a cushion trying to keep it all in front of them. (2) Spencer Rattler had the absolutely best game of his life. I hope he enjoyed it for he will not be able to replicate it. Throw after throw was inches in front of our DB's fingers, even when he was scrambling on the run..When a quarterback is on like that and he can scramble, you are in for a long day. (3) For those of you that think our coach doesn't believe in defense, take a look at the 2023 commitment board and then come back and talk to me. By the way, I don't care what team you are, crap days are going to happen.

SAT night brought back bitter memories of that game. I was a 14 year old in attendance at the NOV 69 Jackson Massacre. It was played in Jackson not Oxford. Lots of similarities. Tenn was 7-0, ranked 3rd in the country and only had to win that game and receive Orange Bowl invite. Team was strong-had blown out Auburn and Bama by 4 TDs and beat GA by 14. Had beat Ole Miss 31-0 in Knoxville in ‘68. Steve Kiner AA LB had made his “they’ve got a lot of jackasses” in preseason when a sportswriter asked him about Ole Miss having a lot of mules or studs. Ole Miss scores first possession and rout was on. I think Ole Miss was 5-3 coming into game. Also rumor has that team found out Coach Dickey was going to FLA the week of the game and that impacted prep/performance. It was a brutal beating. Team barely beat KY and Vandy and wound up getting beat by FL in Gator Bowl and Dickey goes home. BAD MEMORIES. Bobby Scott was QB on that team. Would be interesting to hear his or someone on that teams take on “what happened”.

Sir you have no idea what you vets mean to me because you don't know me . I have a 2nd cousin that was there with the Army 101st . 2 tours infantry. You have all my respect. Back to football, I agree ,Rattler is not as good as it seemed. We played poorly. I think we broke the golden rule of NEVER EVER EVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR OPPONENT. And once the momentum started it was down hill from there . I was 4 years old when you were serving our country. Thanks to you guys I speak American and not a foreign language!!

Thank you for your service, Redleg. I would have been there later if not for draft number 264. When people ask me to go in with them for the lottery, I tell them I've already hit the lottery!

That was the game when Kinet said Archie Who and said Ole Miss were a bunch of mules which fired up the Rebels. Not too different fro Ainge’s comments before the Georgia and South Carolina games this year. I hate when snide comments give an advantage to our opponents.

Thank You and give your cousin a big thumbs up for me. I had good friends in the 101st and some of them did not make it back. They were in a tough area.

Yes. We lost Dickey then Battle took us to the Sugar Bowl and proceeded into a slow burn through the talent on hand that took Coach Majors 8 years to dig out of. Let’s hope this ends better.

that's being generous. it wasnt till the 85 SB year before we ended the year ranked

Yep the reporter said to Kiner they have some thoroughbreds and Kiner said they look more like Mules to me. Our fans were hollering Archie Who before the game and then we lost a stunner 38-0. This is probably the best comparison as far as a shocker game. I do remember a Georgia-Auburn game maybe 10-12 years ago where one was having a great season and was a big favorite and the other was having a horrible season and the game was a total flip and the big underdog destroyed the favorite. I got to look that one up. It was 2006 Auburn was ranked 5th Georgia was struggled with a freshman quarterback named Matt Stafford. Georgia waxed Auburn 37-15 in a game that wasn’t even that close.GBO

This is a prime example of the old adage that those that refuse to learn from past mistakes are doomed to repeat them. Of course that was over 60 years ago.
