40 years ago (hard to believe) I was living in Baton Rouge and Alabama was a 14 pt favorite that day at Legion Field. Tennessee had lost to Pitt & Auburn but had just beat LSU at home. The game wasn’t on Tv but was the “Pick of Dixie” radio game that week and I listened to the game via the Alabama broadcast with John Forney & Jerry Duncan while I build a patio in my backyard.

Tennessee made 2 80 yard pass plays on flanker screens & hung around until late in the 4th Qtr, when Johnny Jones broke a 66 yd run to win the game. I would have been nice to listen to John Ward but it was sweet listening to the bamers cry after that.

Wow, I also was in Baton Rouge then, just having started grad school at LSU.

I think this was the game when Johnny Jones had asked, what's the line? They said, Bama by two. He said, Two points? They said, two TDs. He said, Oh, HELL naw!

Johnny ran directly into my lap on that last TD. Was a joy to see from that end zone..

I was a Soph in HS that year, I'll never forget I was riding in the car with a couple of Bama fans when Jones broke that one.

We lived in the Chicago area and I just a gut feel about the game. Told my wife we were going shopping for her an orange outfit that we were going to win. Got home from the mall to hear sure enough Johnny had gone wild.

Johnny Majors is my all time favorite coach. My avatar is of an 8 year old me sitting with Coach Majors, I am not trying to be a contrarian but Majors did not “ have Alabama’s number during his coaching career. In 16 seasons of coaching at his alma mater Majors had a 4-12 record vs Alabama .

We need to wear the orange pants and white jerseys Saturday, just like that 83 game. The way Johnny wanted it.

And the 4 all came in a row…82-85. But yeah, Bama was his kryptonite, the way Florida has been every subsequent coach’s kryptonite. Johnny’s Tennessee lost to inferior Bama teams in 87 and 90. The 89 team probably should’ve beat Bama too, but dismissing Reggie Cobb that week probably prevented that.

I've got the print of Jones's run hanging in my den.

My wife and I were at the 83 game in Birmingham and loved the big upset win. Also attended the 85 win in Birmingham and the 99 win in Tuscaloosa. Almost nothing better than an away victory over Bama. Also went to 87 loss but 3-1 overall in games at Bama pretty good.
GoVols!
