1983 Tennessee-Alabama game

40 years ago (hard to believe) I was living in Baton Rouge and Alabama was a 14 pt favorite that day at Legion Field. Tennessee had lost to Pitt & Auburn but had just beat LSU at home. The game wasn’t on Tv but was the “Pick of Dixie” radio game that week and I listened to the game via the Alabama broadcast with John Forney & Jerry Duncan while I build a patio in my backyard.

Tennessee made 2 80 yard pass plays on flanker screens & hung around until late in the 4th Qtr, when Johnny Jones broke a 66 yd run to win the game. I would have been nice to listen to John Ward but it was sweet listening to the bamers cry after that.
I remember listening to John Ward since I was in bed with the flu. When JJ broke that run and Ward got excited I jumped out of bed. Funny how we remember certain things.

I don't think I use my early streaming technique.... listening to the game on a construction trailer landline phone in PA with my mom putting her phone next to the radio for 3 hrs like I had to do in 83....

He was like 4-12 vs them. Notorious for losing games where he had the better team, like ‘87, 89, 90, 91…

Johnny Majors is my all time favorite coach. My avatar is of an 8 year old me sitting with Coach Majors, I am not trying to be a contrarian but Majors did not “ have Alabama’s number during his coaching career. In 16 seasons of coaching at his alma mater Majors had a 4-12 record vs Alabama .
I always thought that the little kid in your avatar was a young Popeye.

Johnny ran directly into my lap on that last TD. Was a joy to see from that end zone..

If you look at the last block thrown by UT on Jones’ run, today that would be called, ”Holding, while blocking in the back and unsportsmanlike conduct, excessive blocking during a scoring play” on Tennessee. Get ready for that BS this weekend. GBO

87 and 90 were good examples.

The teams were basically even in 89 and 91 and both were in Legion Field. Reggie Cobb was dismissed that week in 89, which was crippling. Johnny should’ve won in 87 and 90, but we can’t really say that about 89 and 91.

They made Gary Hollingsworth a star in 89. Played the first Qtr with Henton at QB but once Kelly took over, Vols moved the ball at will. Later they moved Pickens to safety & the defense improved significantly. 91 was the worst offensive game plan I’ve seen.

Johnny pulled out the quick kick late in that game. He snuck Colquitt in on 3rd down & long, JC kicked it deep in bama territory that set up the winning TD.

That might be the last quick kick I’ve ever seen (I should say heard)
Johnny did it in the late 80s against some OOC school when I was in school. May have been Georgia Tech or Wake Forest. Anyway, it was late in the game and we were clinging to a slim lead, and the crowd booed.

Was at that game. Bama was whipping us up and down the field. Had enough midway through the 3rd quarter (got tickets for $5) and headed to the strip to drink my sorrows away. Have never left another football early since then.
It was in Birmingham

Saw the 50th Anniversary show in Philly last December, just an amazing night.
