We have now found a way to blame Sanders for 2 of the worst years in recent UT history, 1988 and 2005 (so far).

THat Miss State game was 1986. Sanders had nothing to do with 1988. Jeff Francis started all of 1988 and Andy Kelly was a freshman back up along with Sterling henton.

Hate RS if you must, but the Vols were 10-2-1 in 1987. Only losses were to Alabama and Boston College. The Alabama loss did not hurt the Vols in the rankings much.... but the loss to BC tumbled the Vols to 18th. RS was the starting qb in the game against BC.

The Vols opened the season with a 23-22 win over No. 16 Iowa in the Kickoff Classic.

The tie was to No. 3 Auburn when the Vols rallied from 10 down to tie it.

The loss to Alabama was brutal. The Vols had risen to No. 8 in the country. Alabama was unranked. Freshman quarterback Jeff Dunn led the Tide to 21 first quarter points. Jeff Francis threw 4 interceptions enroute to losing 22-41 in Birmingham.

Despite the loss to Bama, the Vols only dropped to 13th in the country. A trip to unranked Boston College without starting QB Jeff Francis came after the Georgia Tech win. Morristown native Randy Sanders started the game and threw 3 interceptions. With BC leading 20-3 late in the third quarter, Majors sent in freshman QB Sterling Henton. He led the Vols on two scoring drives to cut the lead to 20-18. The Vols got the ball to end the game, but Sanders desparation heave was his final and 3rd interception of the game.

The Vols finished 11-1 the following season in 1989, and tied for the SEC Championship with Alabama and Auburn.
