2 questions, one for Vols fans, and one for those who are also fans of an NFL team

I rarely watch NFL anymore and have little allegiance to any team. As for our
Vols however I still deal with BVS, even after last year, for games of significance i.e. UF, USC, UGA and Bama. This year my biggest concern has been which Joe will show up for all of those particular games.

I absolutely get nervous before a big game for the Vols and I haven’t watched an NFL game in nearly a decade. Losses don’t ruin my whole week like they used to but they still sting. For me, college isn’t just the superior game, it’s the only game.

I used to be nervous and get upset or way too overjoyed about games. That stopped 33 years ago when Bama beat UT 9-6 in a game UT should have destroyed them. Sat in my seat 45 minutes after the game depressed watching Bama fans celebrate in Neyland.

Went home and it came to me, I had zero control over the outcome of games. Coaches and players decide the outcomes and letting my emotions destroy the enjoyment of watching a ball game was very silly. So, no more nerves before games. No more depression over losing. Glad when we win but let it go soon. Just watch the kids compete.

As far as NFL never watch a game and don't have a team.
I was at that game too. A whole lot of us were questioning life after that one lol. 33 years later, it’s still easily the worst game with the worst ending I’ve ever seen. Who ever even heard of a game winning FG attempt getting blocked and squirting backwards 30 yards to set up an opponent’s game winner?!

I’m not nearly as emotional about the NFL but it fascinates me seeing the game at such a high level and the X’s and O’s involved.

I apparently still have a bit of BVS as I was not 100% confident going into SC. Thought last season cured it but not all the way.

Since I retired and laid back now still get a little nervous for big games but don't get that emotional when Vols lose. Attitude now is they don't pay me to worry about it, that's the coaches job.

Since I lived in the Tampa Bay area for 12 yrs do like the Buccaneers but don't rearrange things to watch them like a TN game and losing doesn't matter at all.

As far as NFL, it is the best of best players but growing up in the South, we just don't see the NFL like college.

I have long argued that college football is far superior to NFL, mostly because of the passion of the fans.

(Though I will say, college football is trying really hard to reduce itself to NFL with the first down clock stoppage rules and NIL "free agency")

But 2 questions:

1) Do you get nervous before UT games? Full disclosure that I very much do, especially before big games.

2) If you do, and you have a favorite NFL team, do you get nervous before they play as well?

I just have a sneaking suspicion no one gets nervous before their favorite NFL team plays. But I know several people, myself included, who get nervous before their college team plays.
Yes to #1, no to #2. Don't follow NFL much.

Great question

NFL: gambling and fantasy are its value, otherwise you are pulling for a mascot and listening to political lectures. With the new rules, the umpires have a lot of impact on the outcome. In fact, there are two good rules for wagers - 1) NFL cant afford blowouts due to money, so watch the halftime and be confident that the tam losing by 5-10 pts will comeback and 2) umpires matters to the point that they were followed on wager sites. Last - hard to listen to a NFL player lecturing on anything, when most have trouble with classes, laws, etc. They are not role models (except a few very notable exceptions). SO - don't care anymore, but hope that UT guys do well.

College has taken a downturn with the NIL. The portal is good as it allows balance to the coaching changes. However, NIL is not good for the game since it is pay for play. Hope that there is a character and retention clause in the contracts. In combination, the portal and NIL could result in a mini-NFL, so don't be surprised when you are rooting for Smokey, since the college is only sponsoring training via coaches and facilities: SO - at this point, do care and do get nervous for the team to do its best.

College - not like I used to back in the 90s. The losses stuck with me longer and the wins were celebrated more.

The 15 years of suckage and getting older has made me not get real high or low anymore. I'm over the game win or lose the next day.

Pros - not really. Maybe a little during playoffs.

Fantasy - a complete nervous wreck

Getting older usually gives perspective. Now in my 50s. While I still enjoy college and NFL games, they are just entertainment to me. It’s obviously more fun when my teams win, but I realized a long time ago that my life isn’t impacted one bit by whether it’s a win or a loss.

I’m also a Texas Rangers fan. After watching them blow a World Series a decade ago…not once, but twice with a 2-run lead and the Cards down to their last strike…losses don’t quite sting so much anymore. That was brutal.

I'm a Titans fan, but, I'm not NEARLY as passionate about the Titans as I am the Vols. Mostly because the Titans/Oilers didn't even come to Tennessee until I was in my teens. I get nervous/excited before big Tennessee games. I really only get excited in the same way about Titans games if its a playoff game or for the division. The last time I was really anxious for a Titans game was the 2019 AFC Championship game against the Chiefs. When Dennis Kelly scored on that trick play I really thought that the Titans were a team of destiny that year after knocking off the Patriots and the number 1 seed Ravens.

No with the Titans they get paid smile after games either way shake hands all business. THe Vols yes, only because of inlaws neighbors that hate the Vols and rub it in but you get use to it. Tennessee Vandy game use to make me most nervous. Nowadays I just roll with it either way, I mean how bad do the players feel if they lose.

I’ll say this. As a Bears fan, I’m a PROFESSIONAL at taking a loss and carrying out my week. After a mere subpar performance from the Vols, I’m clinically depressed until the next game.

I love going to UT and Austin Peay games...........but HATE watching them on TV. I do a lot of channel flipping.
Titans............I don't get nervous.

yes, i do get nervous before tennessee games, but I think the major difference is that 1 loss in the SEC likely means your not a playoff team, 2 losses guarantees it versus every NFL team is going to lose more than once, more than twice, and still be a playoff team

Nervous and anxious before every Vols game no matter who the opponent is (See Ga. State, Memphis, South Carolina...etc) ...WAY More so with Football....also with Vols Baseball and Basketball, but less so with those two.

Id rather watch highschool than the NFL......If the NFL and/or the NBA disappeared tomorrow i would not care in the least.

1). Yes. I still get nervous and always have
2). I’m a Bears fan. They’ve sucked for so long I don’t get nervous. I used to back when they were good. Now I expect a loss so a win is a bonus

1) Not usually, but ahead of big games I do. Not like I used to but its hard when you have been down for so long.
2) No. I'm not invested in the NFL like I am UT. Playoffs maybe.... but we don't typically make them...... lol

NFL Playoffs > Any college post season imo

College regular season > NFL regular season

Nothing equals college football rivalry games though.

I don't like it and don't watch it.

I do record lots of college games each weekend. Sundays ( and several days after) are spent watching those games. Enjoy college football as long as it doesn't become too professional I will always enjoy watching. Just don't like professional stuff and I've never thought of it as boycotting.
I am a lot like you on the NFL on Sundays I may watch a series as I'm switching through the TV or if I come on the game and its in last 2 minutes. When I was a kid I had boxes of MLB & NFL player cards and knew about every player on the teams and somewhere I just became ambivalent about the Pro game. I think in the 90s when UT was at their best. I remember watching San Diego around the early 1990s in the Super Bowl and thinking man this game is boring. I have watched every Super bowl,
many were completely boring but I said when I was a kid I'd watch every Super Bowl until I'm 100:D.

The years of awfulness haven’t numbed my enthusiasm or craziness for UT football. It’s more than about just winning or losing to me, there’s just a passion and unity that Tennessee football represents to so many of us that no other sport on earth can replicate. I’ll watch the NFL for the pure spectacle I have no passion invested in it. The Titans don’t deserve the name Tennessee either, there’s only one Tennessee and it’s the boys in Orange

Agreed, they ruined college post season when they made some matter and all the rest don’t.
Back in the day it felt like they all mattered before BCS.

I think because the fact that one loss in college REALLY hurts your playoff chances (if not outright eliminates you) makes me worry more about CFB

When I was growing up, TN had no professional team. Ut was our only team. They were almost never on TV and so I used to listen to John Ward on the radio, while doing yard work. When I got older, my father and I would go to UT games at Neyland and then stop on the way home for the Carson-Newman game. I never got nervous for UT games when I was young because we were a perennial 8-3 or 7-4 team. When Fulmer started winning games, the UF game every year damn near gave me anxiety/panic attack before the game. I still get nervous before games.

As a child, I grew up as a Minnesota Viking fan. But when TN got the Titans, I started watching their games instead. Neither ever captured my heart. I hate the Dallas Cowboys more than I like any NFL team. America's Team my ass. Their cheerleaders are overrated too. I never get nervous before professional games.

I was more of a Peyton Manning fan, than a NFL team fan. Watched a ton of Colt and Broncos games. I got more nervous for him than any NFL team before a game.

WARNING RANT BEGINS HERE:

I HATE the NFL rules. It made the games boring. Next to a touchdown a QB sack is the most common exciting play in the game and they've ruined them [along with kickoffs & big hits in the secondary]. Don't hit below the waist or the head. Don't sling the QB down or LAND on him. Don't launch into him. So many rules for one tackle. 2 steps became 1 step and now it's a half a step before he releases the ball. Watch the first thing defensive players do when they get a sack is look for the flag. If you hit him in bounds as he's running out of bounds, FLAG, even if he's still in bounds.

I HATE the softness of the game. Dick Butkus was a star. Now he'd be ejected in the 1st quarter. They slide all over the place like baseball players. It WAS a sport of gladiators. Now it's a glorified Arena League. No bad weather games hardly anymore. Fake grass. Indoor games. Minnesota used to be the Vikings for real. We watched Alan Page with a beard full of ice, bleeding from both elbows, & limping back to the line of scrimmage burst through the line an smash the QB in the mouth for a sack weekly during the winter months. We KNEW the QB would get up because QBs were tough as well. Taking a shot in the mouth and completing the pass anyway was a point of QB pride. As they played, their fans were badass warriors too screaming shirtless in subzero temperatures with a beer in their hands. Now the NFL is an unaffordable yuppie driven sport. The working class fan is gone. The modern fan is shirtless fat accountant from the burbs. Stadiums are designed for corporate box seats. All those seats are gone for the true fan. The average fan is as soft as the stadiums they play in. Even the grass is fake. A metric ton of ads. It's all designed to separate the fan from their money. I'd hate to know what a beer costs at the game these days. It's a pathetic shell of it's former glory. It's SOUL is gone.

Most of the things you hate about the NFL, the college game is the same way. Fake grass, even more ads than the NFL, and the beer is the same price. Don't forget trying to cut back on kick returns and targeting rules.
