Where has the fade away jump shot went to ? does anybody still use it ? I just watch UT basketball so that is what i see :)

why doesn't any of our post players have a good hook shot ?that is what is needed when the opposing player is taller

nobody seems to use the back board to make shots these days,is it just me or do ya'll think the percentages would go up by the post players ? worked for me in gym and on the asphalt church courts :superman::neener2:

and yes i have been drinking :run::toast::beerf:

Answer to all of your questions: it's just not our players' respective styles.

Except McRae and Richardson will throw up a fadeaway every now and then.

In regards to using the glass, this is where I feel like more players need to emulate Michael. If you actually sit down and break down his game, MJ, along with having probably the greatest footwork ever, used the glass fearlessly. The bank shot is indeed a dying art.

the bank shot is a dying breed, especially when they are close to the basket, use the board and the hook seems to be going the same way

The three point line may have been the beginning of the end for jump shooters using the glass. The finesse and touch required to go to the bank from practically anywhere 15 ft and in isn't focused on as much now as kids want to rain 3s all day long at the gym.

Honestly, if you're shooting from 15-feet and out, I'd just as rather see you shooting a 3-pointer, and I sure as heck don't want to see you trying to bank it in from there.

In today's game, there isn't a more frustrating (and low percentage shot relative to point value) than an 18-foot, 2-point jumper.

The 8 to 10-foot bank shot is a lost art though, but so is the mid-range game altogether. It's why I like Richardson's skill set. He still has a mid-range jumper, and uses it effectively.

With so many floaters being shot, I'm surprised the square isn't used more. Guys floating in from the wing, like Hubbs was doing prior to injury, should use the glass but they don't.
Doom Haynes was the best I ever saw.

Jimmy England was the master of the 15 foot fade-away jump shot. I can still hear John Ward calling that one. Tennessee never had any great hook shot guys, but Len Kosmalski shot a half hook, which was sort of a one-handed sideways jump shot. Very effective with it.

I seem to remember Jarnell attempting some form of a hook against A&M (I think)...it was ugly.

Agreed with all of this. Just was noting that players don't put the work into refining the mid-range game anymore, because of the added incentive of the three. Go to any gym and you'll find a lot of players hoisting a lot of threes. Heck that's what I always did. Shooting is about repeatable mechanics and muscle memory, using the glass adds an element of geometry to that. It's a lot easier for guys to get the feel for the three line and then attack the rim off of that, but the real greats have a much deeper arsenal.

Agree. The 3-pointer complicated strategy, but simplified skill for the most part.

I like a good mid range game,it does help to open up the paint a bit more,or so i think, for what that is worth

if the players are hitting them consistently,it has to be defended which also opens up the 3 pt shot a bit more

i haven't seen a player use the backboard in the mens or womens game in a good long time, let alone a good hook shot, which is a work of art when done right

at least for the Vols, which is all i watch for basketball
