2009 Cup Season Preview

He truly does enjoy life. He might come across as cocky to some but he's really such a fun dude. I keep up with him naturally because he's my favorite and its cool hearing all of the "Robby stories" his other fans share too. I sincerely believe that Robby is one of the top 3 or 4 most raw talents in the sport.

Some may laugh at me or disagree with that statement but I really feel that way. He even admits himself that he drives "all out" all the time and it gets him in trouble some. If he would have the right equipment AND tone it down a notch he would have much more Cup success to show for it than he does right now. But then again part of the reason I like him so much is because he's one of the few left that WILL drive all out all the time. He's a throwback driver that won't just move over and give you position. When you pass Robby Gordon you EARNED that pass. He reminds me alot of Dave Marcis in that regard. Some are too young to remember much of Marcis on here but let me tell you he was one that would never in a million years dream of moving over for anyone at any time. He wouldn't block but he made you earn that pass regardless of whether you were racing him for position or trying to lap him for the 4th time.

I agree Robby has as much natural talent as anyone, just never has caught on the concept of slowing down to win. A lot more like Tim Richmond than "Wingtip" Dave.

One race at Bristol Terry Labonte was in the lead by over a lap on the field when he caught up to Marcis. Dave true to form would not move out of the groove so Terry bumped him and got by. I told my dad, just wait, Marcis is going to get Labonte. I was watching Terry closely as he was my favorite driver at the time. Soon there was a caution, and all pitted. After the restart, I noticed Marcis had dropped all the way to the back of the field, and in just a few laps Labonte was on his bumper. Marcis moved over and Terry took the bait. When he passed (on the high side), Marcis drove him into the wall and killed his chance to win.

Looking forward to the 2009 season. We're going to the Daytona 500! Tickets were $175 each! Ouch-but probably worth it. We'll be in turn 1. Never paid more than $95 previously for any other race we've been to-Dover, Charlotte, Talladega, Pocono.

Good for you! Have you ever been to the 500 before? Where are your seats?

This years race will be my 20th consecutive Daytona 500.

Bunch of new teams in this bad economy. Can't blame them but if too many of them try then some will definitely fail. Jayski shows that 15 new teams have submitted applications to NASCAR for Cup for next year. I'm sure some of them won't even see the track and others will only attempt a race or two.

I have seen though that Derrick Cope, Kirk Shelmerdine, James Finch's car (driver not named), and Norm Benning are all going to attempt to run the full schedule as of now. Daytona's early unofficial list has 52 cars entered with a couple of more pending so Daytona at least should still have a good field. I'd say California will be a whole other story though.

Speaking of that did anyone see the other night on Trackside that they had a "live" feed on and the announcers did not know they were on? It was very interesting to hear DW talk down on NASCAR and what a mess California will be - he said it will be a ghost town out there. He said all of these broke guys will drag all of their junk down to Daytona to try to make the show because they can make a buck but it will be different at California. They were live for over 2 minutes and had no clue they were on. I'm sure someone at Speed will get a lecture over that.

It was up on Youtube and it has been yanked or I would just post the link. It was definitely interesting to see what these guys really think instead of spewing out what NASCAR tells them to.

I heard about it but didn't see it. Wish I could have. He was speaking the truth. Thats what NASCAR needs more of!

I caught it live, and my first thought was 'wow, DW has really gone over the line. NASCAR is going to be making a phone call. Then a stage hand walked in front of the camera, and I realized the guys thought they were off the air. Very revealing, wish there was a show where honest opinions were given.

It's a shame too. Nascar is really going to be impacted this year by the terrible economy. It will still be interesting - always is.

Joe Nemechek just announced he plans to have a full time Toyota car in Cup and a full time Chevy in Nationwide. No sponsors mentioned here either just said that they have some promising opportunities or something like that. Seems like most of these teams that are saying they are going to run full time has nothing in the way of sponsorship for sure and all of them are optimistic about sponsorship coming available. I have a feeling most of these guys will be broke by the first of March personally. Everyone saw that there was going to be a shortage of cars so then EVERYONE decided to buy some COT's and go racing. It would have worked if it would have only been two-three teams trying this but there's way too many going to try this to make it work.

I just saw today 5-6 more national chains on the verge of closing their doors with K-Mart/Sears predicted to be gone by the end of the year now too. With the way things are I can't see all of these teams landing sponsors. Maybe small sponsors for one off races here and there but nothing major. Heck, even Stewart is having problems getting full funding for Newman's car. When a name like Stewart isn't attracting sponsors I'm sorry but I can't see how Nemechek, Norm Benning, and Derrike Cope are going to land them.
