As a Bronco fan, we've needed to address the D-Line for years. I love Peterson, but our DBs will never be effective without pressure. The problem is, I don't know which D-Lineman to take.
The Panthers are taking Luck if he comes out. Clausen is only getting paid second round money and was terribly inconsistent the entire year and Pike wasn't picked until the 6th round and has not shown much promise.
For sure, we have no pass rush. Hopefully when Dumervil is healthy next year that will help that, but Denver should take Fairley or Bowers. Not sure which would be better.
I've not really paid attention to Bowers. Fairley has a great motor and aggression (dirty), but it seems like much of his pressure comes from a swim move combined with great speed from a big man. I'm worried that won't translate well.
Also, we have to decide if we are sticking 3-4 or moving back to a 4-3. With so many good 4-3 D Lineman in this draft, I'd sort of want to go back. But I also feel like Ayers and Dumervil are better utilized in a 3-4.
I don't know, I'm torn. But we really need to build our defense from the Line back. And I think Champ is gone, and I hope he lands a place that can win him a ring. I wanted to trade him a year or two back, when I knew we wouldn't be a contender for a while (the 8-0 start was practically a fluke).
If we were to trade down, I would really like Cameron Heyward. He's the perfect size for a 3-4 end and he's dominating right now with bull rushes and some nice moves. He might still be there in the second round. Bowers in the first and Heyward in the second would be my liking. I would really love to see us load up in the front 7 of the D as much as possible.
For anyone wondering if a lockout cancelled a draft:
However, a rookie salary cap agreement might happen prior to the draft since the union and owners are on the same page there. But one reason it might not happen, veterans are starting to come around to the high price rookies since they are using it to negotiate high deals for themselves. For instance, Eric Berry being the high paid safety is going to work out for the pro bowl safeties.
But the draft will certainly happen. And that's a good question about the draft order following a lock out season.
I would hate for the rich to get richer, if they reversed order, but Carolina going twice would not be fair either.
