They totally tiptoed over the Yucca Mountain issue (because they are in LV) when it's a prime example of government/political failure. I wonder if Paul realizes who actually pays for the project.
Government has spent ~$11B on a project that should have cost $7B; while nuclear operators have paid $17B in fees for the nuclear waste fund which funds it (although. If the gov't fails to start accepting spent fuel by 2020, they might be on the hook for $12B in liabilities. All the fees are paid for by the public in electricity costs as well as the additional funding from the weapons programs.
My suggestion is to stick with it. As far as I understand, the science is sound and Yucca Mountain is the best place for the waste. Convince Nevadans that they need the high paying jobs. Also suggest that future research projects for spent fuel management such as reprocessing or burner reactors be located on site (duh) that will bring the remaining cash located in the fund ($20B) to Nevada.
Does it sort of stink for Nevadans to be forced to accept nuclear fuel when they have no plants....yes. I'd also argue the weapons testing was ****ty too. But we did it for the best interests of the country...somewhat. Just do what needs to be done and move along.
Silly rant, but nuclear has been on the back burner since Fukushima.
