It looks like we'll have 18 scholarship WRs and 7 TEs (not including walk-ons) on the roster in 2014. That seems like an inordinate number of both; it's actually 6 more WRs than Coach Jones has stated he'd like "in a perfect world."

WRs
Seniors: Dallas, Young, Carter
Juniors: Howard, Johnson, Blanc, Jackson
Sophomores: Bowles, Croom, Harris, North
Freshmen: Jenkins (RS), Smith (RS), Creamer, Wharton, Powell

That's 16, and we'll likely add Eric Lauderdale and one more high schooler (Booth?). Creamer could conceivably play DE and Wharton might end up at DB.

TEs
Seniors: Quinn, Downs
Juniors: King
Sophomores: Branisel, Meredith
Freshmen: Wolf, Helm

It's a good plan to have more than enough so that if injuries or suspensions take place we still have body's. Also, every WR will bring a certain talent to the team that will help in adding more specialized plays for that individual to throw wrinkles in the other teams gameplan.

Personally, I like it.

Agreed. All of our receivers compliment each other verry well

All it does is create competition, which is always a good thing. No doubt there will be position changes and transfers when all is said and done and that's ok. It just means the best players earned their playing time.

I'm with fade on the numbers, there will be 5 seniors gone next year and like was stated above a couple might move to other positions, figure in a couple that will transfer or leave the team for whatever reason, that will be a dent of between 6 to 10 according to what happens,so it might not be as deep as you think

Couple months ago we were complaining about not having enough WR's and TE's and the orange and white game showed we needed more.. welp, guess we got them. So lets not complain that we have too many..

I'm not a math proffesor or a scientest but if 5 out of 22 starters are WRs or TEs then that's over 20%, plus they do all the runs for the passes so it makes scense to have some more catchers for the passes on the roster

It would be great if it didn't mean that we would be short handed at other positions.

Of course players are going to transfer. That's like saying water is wet. If were going to play at the minium 3 wr/te all the way to 5 in one formation. Were going to get anywhere from ~30% up to a little less than half of the offense. It makes sense for depth purposes.

This. I'm not so much worried about having too many WRs/TEs as I am concerned with shorting ourselves at other positions.

I've heard fans say "you can never have too many ______," filling in the blank with every position except OL. But there can be negative consequences, not just in terms of shortages at other positions but also in player development, especially if you're relying on attrition & position changes to remedy an apparent surplus at any one spot.

That said, Coach Jones clearly has a plan and I believe he's a very savvy & strategic guy, so I'm not going to worry a lot about this situation -- but I do find it interesting. I'm very pleased with the talent we appear to be stockpiling at WR & TE.

My biggest concern is our lack of depth at LB going in to next season. Of course Creamer is a possibility to be moved to LB. I could also see a scenario where Justin King moves back if the other TEs pan out.
