2014: 30% of our roster will be WRs & TEs

It looks like we'll have 18 scholarship WRs and 7 TEs (not including walk-ons) on the roster in 2014. That seems like an inordinate number of both; it's actually 6 more WRs than Coach Jones has stated he'd like "in a perfect world."

WRs
Seniors: Dallas, Young, Carter
Juniors: Howard, Johnson, Blanc, Jackson
Sophomores: Bowles, Croom, Harris, North
Freshmen: Jenkins (RS), Smith (RS), Creamer, Wharton, Powell

That's 16, and we'll likely add Eric Lauderdale and one more high schooler (Booth?). Creamer could conceivably play DE and Wharton might end up at DB.

TEs
Seniors: Quinn, Downs
Juniors: King
Sophomores: Branisel, Meredith
Freshmen: Wolf, Helm
So why does this concern you? There's always certain positions on any team that are deeper than others, and that will change from year to year.

It's a good plan to have more than enough so that if injuries or suspensions take place we still have body's. Also, every WR will bring a certain talent to the team that will help in adding more specialized plays for that individual to throw wrinkles in the other teams gameplan.

Personally, I like it.

Um no. Specialized plays for each WR??? Really??? If that were the case which it isn't, that is an easy scout.

UT needs more offensive and defensive linemen than WR's!!!

I'm not a math proffesor or a scientest but if 5 out of 22 starters are WRs or TEs then that's over 20%, plus they do all the runs for the passes so it makes scense to have some more catchers for the passes on the roster
.

5 starters are WR's and TE's???

Nor sure where u get that number...

LT, RT, LG, RG, C, QB, RB often 2 RB's....

30% of roster should not be made up of WR's and TE's.

It seems to me that we need a lot of receivers due to our hurry up offense. Each play, receivers cover more ground than any other player and I expect several of them will run to the sidelines after every play while the next receivers come into the huddle and give the QB the next play.

In our heyday, we converted a ton of fast players to LB that played RB and Receiver at the HS level. It may just be history repeating itself! Butch has been studying! :)

GO VOLS!!

the problem is only 85 of those guys are on scholarship.

unless, you want to rely on walk ons to provide needed depth.

You cant do this, it defeats the purpose of the hurry up .. if the offense subs then the refs stand over the ball and give the defense time to sub. You can only "quick snap" when you havent subbed.
