Not highly impressed with Jones overall as a coach-yet. But, it is difficult to deny his ability as a recruiter. Appears to be as good or better than Fulmer so far. I hope he proves to be a better developer and tactician.

Could you elaborate on that for me? :hi:

“Yeah, they were real happy,” Gooden said. “Coach Jancek went to tell Coach Butch, and then he went to go to talk to Coach Strip. “Coach Butch was very happy. He was enthusiastic. He told me, ‘Welcome to the family,’ and that there was more to come.”

“Coming to Tennessee today, just as soon as I walked into the building I felt welcomed,” Gooden said. “That was basically touching.” “They were telling me everything, like what techniques I wanted to work on and all that stuff,” he said. “When it’s a player or an ex-player who played the position I’m playing, and they’re telling me what I need to work on, it was just great.”

“We’re Tennessee boys,” said Gooden, who’s a safe bet to be one of the state’s top 2016 prospects. “This is the place to be. This is a dream.” “I’m not sure,” he said. “I’m not (planning anything) as of now. I just know I’m committed to Tennessee, and I want to be a Vol. I’m just ready to hit the weight room harder and take some of the techniques I’ve learned from Coach Strip today watching videos and using it in my game and just dominating.”

Perhaps I can help. 4 embarrassing blowout losses to the best teams we played (Oregon, Bama, Mizzou, Auburn) and a bad loss with a bowl game on the line vs Vandy. I love the guy, he's been phenomenal off the field. Not sold yet with him on the field after a small sample size. The team has to be much more competitive before we can make a judgment IMO.

Not in anyway defending bUTch or the results of the year. But I think people forget the state of the program is in after these last 5 years.

1) Team 117 faced the nation's toughest schedule based off opponent winning percentage (.658)

2) That same schedule included 7 teams ranked at kickoff & 5 of the top 10 teams in the final BCS standings.

3) Tennessee played 15 true freshmen and 9 RS freshmen.

4) We lost 4 future NFL players in 2012. (Bray, Rivera, Hunter, CP).

My analysis is you can't expect a guy coming into a situation like this to blow everyone away. How do you expect a team with yet again new coordinators, coaches, philosophies, etc. to perform at a high caliber in such a short time frame? The SEC is the best conference in college football and as a program the last 5 years this team has been in a "state of emergency" regarding it's usual place in CFB. Obviously losing Bray (knucklehead or not) and our talented receivers hurt. If they would have stayed I bet we win 8 games. That said, although this team went 5-7 missing a bowl, getting blown out by FAR SUPERIOR TEAMS, etc. This same team still managed to register their best rushing total since 2004 with an OL that was a more finesse pass happy group rather than road graters. Jmo TIFWIW :hi:

With that said, I do expect a bowl game this year. 6-6 at worst, 7-5 at best.

Edit: We also had a significant improvement on special teams. Palardy was reliable for the first time and punted extremely well as well. Do you remember who he praised for that? We also had a blocked punt RT for a TD as we all know and pressured punts a lot more than previous years. There was improvement, regardless of the W-L column. The fUTure is bright.

I agree with the assessment. Not saying he's a bad coach, just that I haven't been overly impressed with game day decisions. Maybe he just didn't feel we had the personell to compete and just wanted to try to shorten the games and not take risks. Either way there were several games last year we could've won but didn't. Most notably, Vandy. Even in the one good win we did have (sc), we needed a desperation heave to win. And that was after leading just about the whole game.
Either way no one can deny how well he's done recruiting and representing the program.

I'm a huge Butch guy and I've defended and will continue to defend his career record and 4 conference titles prior to becoming UTs coach. I think he's a winner. I also agree with you that the state of program he took over was at historic lows in terms of talent, morale, "health", and of course, winning.

But I'm just giving a honest assessment of the team's performance in his first year. Other than hanging with Georgia and beating SCar, which were both very good, he gave me little to nothing as "on-field" evidence to feel confident about. I believe he will in time, but I haven't seen it yet. Those were some really poor losses last year.

Unfortunately, I would have to agree with that. I don't remember what team it was but UT secured a win with a pick in the end zone against a far inferior team. I was PO'd that game I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Over time I think it will turn around, these guys love bUTch and the staff and the staff have installed confidence and that is where it all starts. Losing is a disease and winning is a mindset. You can achieve a significant amount of things if you believe. :hi:
