It is very sad. I wonder what kind of injury she had.

EDIT: Now I'm seeing it's because of a mental health issue. I know it's none of my business, and I don't pretend to understand what she's going through. It must be major to pull out of the Olympic finals. I feel really bad for her teammates as well.

You have to look deeper into this. The race baiters over the last few years who helped create a persona that overwhelmed her. Classic example how focusing on negative issues and false narratives can be detrimental. What is scarier is they may never see or understand it which means they won't correct it. We will be lucky if she doesn't suffer from depression.

Only she knows what she is truly going through, and I do not feel entitled to an explanation, nor will I attempt to guess why she is having a problem with her mental health. If she ever wants to share, in detail, what she has been going through, I will listen, but I do not think she owes anyone an explanation. I wish her the best. I hope she comes out of this healthy, whether she continues her gymnastics career or retires. Go USA, win more medals! 🏅

I'm all about mental health but Jesus, if you're worried your head space will lead to injury, that's not a reason to not compete. I get it if you are having a nervous breakdown but fear of injury is just selfish. IDK, maybe she didn't explain herself well.

Are you saying she’s a victim of race discrimination and as a result she’s suffering from a mental health attack? I’m no expert in mental health, but blaming a person’s metal health struggles on race issues sort of minimizes it to me.

If you are doing double back flips with twists and cannot properly see/feel a reference point, I would imagine that would be very dangerous. I’ve never done that kind of acrobatics, so I have no idea how it feels.

That is not what I'm saying. I'm saying the exact opposite.

She is quitting on the team events to focus on her individual events?

Glad to see the IOC's model crumbling apart. Too bad for the suckers that lined up to their trough, though.

Nobody really wants to host the Olympics anymore, and Tokyo demonstrates the danger

Beijing needs to be left with the same fate for the 2022 Winter games as Tokyo since China has probably cost the world trillions and millions of lives yet they continue to lie and was coddled early on which is a travesty in and of itself.

We are seeing these other power struggles played out every day and the corruption that goes along with it outside the IOC.

The summer games were once and very recently the greatest sporting events known to mankind.

So your saying she hasn't proven to you that it is acceptable for her to question her mental health?
Has she ever talked about having a "mental health" problem before? That's not something that just pops up the morning of the Olympic finals.

If she doesn't feel safe doing it she shouldn't be out there, but

(1) terrible timing, and

(2) I don't consider that kind of apprehension, in and of itself, to be a "mental health" issue.

It's like World's Fairs they are money losers for the hosts...its also terrible optics when cities like Rio put all that money into state of the art venues and 2 blocks away people are starving...but hey people over here got to see some cool sports like equestrian and water polo The Rio Olympics were a financial disaster and it keeps getting worse

Going to be interesting if she comes back and competes in the individual events and says “I’m fine now”

Oh she’s screwed either way if she comes back to compete.

If she wins, she’s a selfish quitter who left her team hanging (even though her teammates didn’t appear to feel that way).

If she doesn’t win, she’s a washed up, spoiled millennial who choked (even thought she’s clearly the greatest female gymnast ever).

Everybody laughed at the Atlanta Olympics. I believe though that they were the last that at the end of the day turned a profit. Granted it was a small token amount left in the end when all the bills were paid which I believe was donated to charity.

These days, with the "arms race" of stadiums and billion dollar opening ceremonies, the event pretty much has to be state sponsored. That means China, Russia, and a few other countries with more oil revenue than they know what to do with (see Qatar and the world cup) are going to be left bidding against each other.
