Can someone break down velo projections for these younger prospects? If a kid is sitting mid 80s on his fastball as a sophomore in high school, where do you typically expect him to land as a freshman/sophomore in college? I see Derek Schaefer (2023) was topping out at 90mph (probably sitting mid 80s) as a sophomore in 2021 and supposedly Taylor Tracey (2025) is topping out at 86mph (likely sitting low 80s) as a Freshman. What is the typical range for these guys when they get to campus?

Matthew Dallas (Briarcrest Christian School) committed to UT last July.

Dallas is committed to pitch for Tennessee and much like his approach on the mound, getting his commitment out the way hasn't changed anything for him. “I don’t really think about being committed,” he said. “I feel like I have a lot more stuff to get better at. The harder I work now, it will be easier when I get there.”

Briarcrest coach Craig Hopkins sees how he handles the spotlight. He has played in big games in summer baseball as well as playing in the state tournament and for a state championship last season as a sophomore.

This season Dallas, who throws in the 90s, is 2-2 in 23⅓ innings with 50 strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA.

Matthew Dallas: Tennessee Vols baseball commit fueled by brothers

Article mentions two players who committed to the Volunteers.

5. Austin Hunley, RHP/SS, Mount Juliet

Before the beginning of his junior season, Hunley committed to the University of Tennessee, setting high expectations for the rest of his high school career. The staff in Knoxville could not ask much more out of the middle Tennessee native as he went on to post a 0.46 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 46 innings in 2021. Hunley possesses a nifty fastball-slider combination while also working on a developing curveball and changeup. Hunley should fit in well with the prestige that the Volunteer pitching staff has.

6. AJ Russell, RHP/IF, Franklin

Another Volunteer commit, Russell brings a unique ceiling with his size. He stands at 6-foot-5, 175 pounds with plenty of raw power. Once he fills out, the third baseman could develop some truly special pop. He also is quite intriguing on the mound, already touching the low 90s with his fastball. He put up a 0.63 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 44.1 innings last spring.
