That’s good. We definitely shouldn’t mislead these kids, but as I understand it, the UTAD wasn’t quite ready for the NIL to begin and that set us back. I think we can do more but we’re still in the infancy of all this.
We have no real evidence that we were unprepared for NIL. That is just a rumor Basilio is spreading. It could be true. It very well might not be. Personally, I find it hard to believe a university as large as Tennessee got caught with their pants down on a rule change that was in the pipeline for years. I am much more inclined to believe Barnes and his line of reasoning being that other schools are spinning a yarn about how much a kid will make if you come to our school.
I feel like these fanciful promises are the new "We know you're really a WR, but we'll tell you that you can play QB if you come here" only to not really give someone a chance at QB. Essentially, coaches are always going to find a way to lie to students to get them to commit and then hope the student isn't willing to sit a year if they are unhappy. In the era of the free transfer rule, we'll see how long this works out for some coaches.
