2022 Target List

That’s good. We definitely shouldn’t mislead these kids, but as I understand it, the UTAD wasn’t quite ready for the NIL to begin and that set us back. I think we can do more but we’re still in the infancy of all this.

We have no real evidence that we were unprepared for NIL. That is just a rumor Basilio is spreading. It could be true. It very well might not be. Personally, I find it hard to believe a university as large as Tennessee got caught with their pants down on a rule change that was in the pipeline for years. I am much more inclined to believe Barnes and his line of reasoning being that other schools are spinning a yarn about how much a kid will make if you come to our school.

I feel like these fanciful promises are the new "We know you're really a WR, but we'll tell you that you can play QB if you come here" only to not really give someone a chance at QB. Essentially, coaches are always going to find a way to lie to students to get them to commit and then hope the student isn't willing to sit a year if they are unhappy. In the era of the free transfer rule, we'll see how long this works out for some coaches.

I tend to agree. And if we're right, we'll see the transfer portal fill up in the next couple of years. I recall hearing and reading that UT was out in front of NIL when it became official, so unless we didn't fully understanding it's total potential, I doubt one can claim we dropped the ball. Doesn't sound like something a forward looking AD like White would do.

You could be right about this. Obviously, Barnes might not be making these types of promises, but now the result will be greatly intensified by the NIL.

On the flip side, maybe that will increase our opportunities in the Transfer Portal, where we can say, "See, I told you they were lying to you!"

Is anyone willing to provide a rundown of our top targets for 2022? I’ve not kept up with bball recruiting lately, but after that exhibition my interest is piqued….Much appreciated!

That’s not true. We were actually the first school in the country to create an NIL education program for athletes.

The staff targeted numerous Top 30 recruits for the 2022 class and has missed on all of them for one reason or another. At this point is appears possible BJ Edwards is the only signee for the fall class but Tennessee is supposedly making a run at an under the radar guy Angel Montas. He has an Illinois offer and then a few mid major offers, unranked by all services…I would think they’d have to get him on a visit soon if they wanted to land him for the fall class, not sure there.

BHH and Tamba were basically 2022 recruits since they both reclassified

After getting completely embarrassed in Fall 2022 recruiting, I really hope we are aiming higher than Montas.

That’s not true. We were actually the first school in the country to create an NIL education program for athletes.

There’s a huge difference in having an education program and actually cultivating NIL deals for existing and potential athletes. It seems we felt good about our top targets, NIL became official, and those recruits were drawn elsewhere for some reason.

I’m not blaming this team staff in any way. Basilio was talking about how Barnes is furious behind the scenes that the UTAD wasn’t ready to assist with all of this. Basilio mentioned he contacted the UTAD directly in the summer about collaborating with athletes in some local deals and their response was something along the lines of ‘We can’t help you. It’s allowed but we don’t have anything in place to actually make it happen’

It seems they weren’t entirely prepared to hit the ground running and it has been to our detriment so far with the top ‘22 recruits.

When Tennessee offered Dillon Mitchell, Noah Clowney, Yohan Traore and Ernest Udeh those guys weren’t ranked in the Top 100…just maybe this staff has a decent eye for talent and we don’t overreact on an offer? Not saying Montas blows up like those guys, but early reports on Zeigler & Diboundje sound great, if the staff is pushing to take him now it would make me think they feel pretty confident in what they’ve seen.

NIL is so new I don’t think anyone can reasonably have strict expectations for how it should work. There’s going to be differences in how people approach it regardless of preparation. I’d take that rumor a huge grain of salt

Don’t come on here and speak the truth because most of these Barnes worshippers have their head in the sand. This is one more thing that he’s not willing to change with the times and it will come back to haunt him. While several other SEC schools are getting 5 star players, since we don’t play the NIL game, we’re back to 3 and 4 star players. I’m glad we have this season to look forward to because unless things change it’s all down hill after this year

Loving these conclusions you’ve come to a couple months after NIL became a thing and with absolutely no info. Cmon man

Lmao, at some point you’d think you’d be sick of making bball predictions that turn out terribly wrong…guess not.

I’m going to enjoy returning to this thread a few months to a year from now. I guarantee you NIL is not going to be an issue for us long term.
everyone knew NIL was coming, it’s not as if guys in the 2021 class had no clue about what was coming or were going to be prohibited from getting a deal 3 months after getting on campus…didn’t seem to stop us from landing a Top 5 class.

I don't think long-term we'll be hurt by NIL. I think we'll get our **** in order soon. I'm not worried. But, Kentucky as expected is being Kentucky. We do need to step up our game, but I don't think it's why 2022 has been a disappointing class so far.
