Who would win? This would be an awesome game to watch. 2022 has the advantage with the head coach. 2016 has the better DC. As good as Dobbs was, Hooker is better. 2022 DBs couldn't handle Jennings. This would be all sorts of fun.

2022. 2016 team had head cases on it. This team is fully locked in and together.

Main reason after thinking about it is obvious. Heupel over BJ any day and twice on Sundays!

2022, and I'm not even sure it would be all that close because coaching would make a huge difference. 2022's offense would still move up and down the field against 2016's defense. Dobbs, Kamara, and JJ would make some plays against 2022's defense, but 2016's offensive staff would not use them effectively enough. Hooker is a better QB than Dobbs and would make more plays.

2016, as good as that team looked on paper, lost to a 6-7 South Carolina team, a 6-7 Vandy team, and should have lost to App St. The 2022 squad does not lose/almost lose any of those games. The 2016 team also gave up 36 points to a 7-6 Kentucky team, 37 points to a 4-8 Missouri team, and 45 to Vandy. It's better than 2022's defense, but it isn't like the 2016 team had an incredible defense. They could be scored upon.

Also beat Georgia on a hail mary.

If we are still comparing the 2022 and 2016 teams at the end of this season, then the season will have turned out to be a disappointment.

Hooker much better passer it seems but Josh Dobbs was unbelievable running the ball and effortless doing it.

This is true. I had to go back and watch some career highlights to remember just how fluid and decisive he was in the open field. Hooker can move, but he’s clunky and awkward when he’s trying to make someone miss in space. I’d say they’re equal in feeing pressure and escapability within the pocket. Hendon is the better passer without a doubt. That dime to Hyatt on Saturday was fantastic.

I think 2015 would be a better comparison with 2022.

Was about to post the same thing. The 2015 team at the end of the season was a much better team than what Butch trotted out in 2016. Almost as if Butch didn’t know how to develop any talent that he brought in

Butch sucked at developing talent the only exception was Dobbs,Barnett and Kamara.

2022 rolls them. The 2016 team had some great individual talent, but there was never a point that I thought they were worthy of a high ranking or would have a prayer against the Alabamas of the world, mainly because Jones was the ultimate pretender who never had a clue how to develop and best utilize the talent he was recruiting. Case in point - Kamara. It was only a matter of when, not if, he would implode here.

This is a fun question, thanks for it:

QB: edge to '22, love Josh Dobbs but Hendon has some intangibles that set him apart
RB: strongly in favor of '16
TE: edge to '16
OL: strongly in favor of '22
WR: advantage '22
All in all, the '22 offense has the advantage

DL: edge to '16. I would've said strongly, but man have the '22 lads come on strong lately
LB: significant favor to '16
DB: strongly favors '16
Put this together, and I think you have to conclude the '16 team had the better defense by a good margin. We were actually pretty blessed back then, with Derek Barnett, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Cam Sutton, and all that crew.

Special teams: I think both '16 and '22 are pretty darn strong; Evan Berry and Sutton returned more punts and kickoffs to the house in '16 though, so edge to them

But finally, here's the real kicker:

Coaching and Scheme: '22, by about a light year.

And we all know that all those pieces don't weigh equally. In the modern game, four people stand out as the keys to success: the QB, the head coach, and the two coordinators.

Given that, I would take the '22 crew over '16, 8 games out of 10. Maybe 9 of 10.

Go Vols!

I think the 2016 would come back from 21 points and win right at the end. Remember Butch and Dobbs had some big comebacks in big games. You couldn’t ever count them out.

2022 and not even close.

Coaching, scheme, qb and receivers, and mentality are all things 2022 team has on 2016. 2022 Vols are rocking opponents and will be in every game they play. That 2016 team barely beat App State and Ohio and lost to SC and Vandy. Butch was a terrible coach and leader cause that team was talented enough to win the SEC.

They wouldn’t have beat Bama in the SEC title game but no doubt they should’ve won the East and got to Atlanta.
