2023 Team Rankings

There are 3 types of lies in this world... lies, damn lies and statistics.

CJH had us ranked #1 in the nation with classes that included the #35th ranked in 2020.

Recruiting the right kids that *fit* into your program then coaching them up is more important than just getting high * kids. SEE: Pruitt debacle.

Also, recruiting thugs and kids with character issues generally ends with them being dismissed from the team. SEE: Kiffin debacle.

CJH seems to have done a fine job recruiting-wise to date. Not only are we getting high * caliber kids, but we are winning most of the battles for specific kids we really appear to want/need. SEE: 2023 DB commitments.

GBO.

Vols are ranked #11 in both total points and average stars
Vols-3.61 Average stars 6th in SEC
Nico is ranked 4th overall. 3rd ranked QB after Arch Manning & Dante Moore
I would almost bet my house that Nico has a better college career than either of those QB’s. If Arch didn’t have his last name, he wouldn’t be ranked above Moore or Nico.

If we had some higher caliber players on defense, we likely make the playoffs. Recruiting 100% matters. You may have a great season occasionally without elite recruiting, but long term success requires higher level recruiting

I’m curious to see how Michigan matches up to UGA. If you look at Michigan’s recruiting the past 4 years and it ranges from like 8-13.

IMO, the key to recruiting isn’t stacking 5 star on 5 star, but instead the more important thing is to hit on 75% of your players. Having a 5 star sprinkled in can go a long way (especially at QB), but you can complete and win without having to replicate what UGA does recruiting.

Our past high ranked classes were fools gold because we would lose 50% of the top rated guys in the first 2 years. If you looked back, our classes were more like 30th if you account for attrition.

What would you call our defensive recruiting this year?

14 of 23 commits are defensive players. 1 5*, 7 4* & 6 3*... And one of those is Jalen Smith who is definitely better than his rating.

3 edge
3 DL
3 cb
3 safeties
2 lbs

We're probably not done yet either and there's the portal that really have even gotten started.

The only thing I noted was that would make us 7th in the expanded SEC with a couple others nipping at our heels. Great job - more work to be done.

Florida gets to recruit the state of FL. They should never not be in top 10

I get that the state of Florida is rich with talent but the recruiting landscape is evolving. With Mike Norvel, Mario Cristobal, Gus Malzahn…. Florida recruiting the backyard isn’t quite as it used to be… Just imagine if Deion gets the USF gig…

In the ‘23 class, the state of FL has 9 consensus five stars, 23 top 100 players, 42 top 200 players, 58 top 300 players, and 73 four stars (82 4* + 5*).

There is more than enough talent to go around in FL for FL to always have a top 10 class.

UF will never catch UGA recruiting 10th ranked classes. Counting low end 4’s isn’t going to get the job done. UF can’t afford to split elite in state talent with Miami, FSU etc… It’s a recipe for consistent mediocrity and we all know how kindly that bunch takes mediocre results.

I don’t want FL to catch UGA.

We were talking about them being in the top 10 in recruiting every year. Plenty of prospects available every cycle for that to happen.

People said nobody would catch Bama until they recruited like Bama. Then Clemson took classes that had never been ranked inside the top 5 and won 2 NCs. So what does “catching UGA” look like? Bc bad news, they’re gonna be good every year no matter how everyone else recruits.

Clemson had stacked elite classes for years and had a top 5 class the year before their first championship. They also had the benefit of emerging from an extremely weak, non competitive ACC. A luxury that UF does not have in the SEC. We’ve all seen the model at Bama and UGA. It takes thoroughbreds to win championships in the SEC.

seemingly recruiting at TN's level and developing those offensive players and finding success on the field with a "novel" offense is something that CJH has proven can be done at a very high level in the SEC.

the question I have is has there been a "novel" defensive scheme that has changed the game the way CJH's offense has done?

besides Monte Kiffin's Tampa 2 defense, have there been any new concepts that have proven difficult for an offense to be successful against?
