2024-2025 Tennessee Basketball Team Discussion

Made a few important plays there when we hit a lull. Also got to play in some crunch time minutes.
Yep. Looks like Dubar is going to be a factor this year.

It was also good to see Boswell get some productive minutes. If he’s going to be a guy we cash count on, when Carr gets back, we should be 10 deep with guys who can play important minutes

Agree - Dubar has shown some nice flashes. He provided a nice spark last night...that sequence where he blocked the shot, rebounded and then hit a 3 pointer was awesome! Hopefully he continues to contribute and increase his minutes.

That was awesome to see from Dubar. He is going to be important piece moving forward l. Especially if Okpara continues to struggle

Still early but if Felix does not start defending and rebounding better come conference play I would expect his minutes to decrease. He does not have an offensive game. Give his minutes to Cade.

Feel like Felix has the mentality to improve on both ends of the floor, especially if they drill it into him that he needs to just dunk and not try any hooks.

But damn even if Mashack and Phillips are sitting, imagine a lineup with ZZ, Chaz, Gainey/Cam, D-Stone, and Igor from a shooting perspective.

Boswell coming up with some big rebounds was definitely a plus. Obviously gotta see more than that if we are to count on him, but making the hustle plays is a good start

He seems to make one or two hustle plays each game in pretty limited minutes and he seems to have cut down on the turnovers. If he can give us a few decent minutes that’s a big plus

Tennessee is rolling toward the new year as the No. 1 ranked team in the country and that’s likely to be the case for at least three more weeks.

It’s debatable just how much Tennessee has really been tested by its non-conference schedule other than beating Baylor on a neutral court, but that was a legit test on Saturday at Illinois.

Forget about Illinois not being ranked right now, that will be one of the best teams in the Big Ten this year and that was a big time win for Rick Barnes and his team.

That’s one that will look good on the resume´, but more importantly, the Vols grew as a team in that game.

Chaz Lanier scored two points in the second half at Illinois and Zakai Zeigler sat on the bench for 14 minutes of the second half. But the Vols found a way to win thanks to 18 second half points from Jordan Gainey and some timely contributions from Darlinstone Dubar.

Dubar’s progression into a contributing role player has been a huge development for this team in light of JP Estrella’s injury.

It’s not overstating things to say that back in early November the staff legitimately didn’t know what, if anything, Dubar would contribute after he stepped away from the team for a time while dealing with personal issues.

For him to go from being a guy who was a complete question mark six weeks ago to someone who played 16 minutes and scored 13 points on Tuesday night against Western Carolina is huge for a team that’s working with 10 scholarship players at the moment.

Speaking of that, getting Cam Carr back (around the first of January) is going to be a real boost simply due to the numbers, but it’s going to be interesting to see how the staff works him in. Pretty clearly things are clicking for this team right now, so figuring out how to work Carr into the rotation without disrupting the chemistry we’re seeing right now will be worth watching.

Bishop Boswell was in a sling after taking a blow to his left shoulder on Tuesday night. Tennessee representatives declined to offer an update on Boswell’s status on Thursday afternoon so that situation is worth monitoring.

Boswell in a sling and no comment by the staff seems like not great news is on the horizon. Could possibly be down to 9 scholarship players soon.
That's sort of what I was afraid of, and it appeared to be his shooting arm, too, not that we're leaning on him to be a scorer. I guess the good news is we don't need him in these next two games, necessarily, and his absence, if extensive, hopefully coincides with Cam Carr's return.

Anybody know how many games played eliminate the ability to get a retrospective injury redshirt?

I believe it is still technically 1 minute played in a game burns your redshirt in college basketball. Lots of talk about a rule similar to football, but it's not been approved to my knowledge.

There’s an exception if there’s a season ending injury though. I think Fulk got it, Estrella should get it

Sorry, I totally missed the word "injury" in your post.
I think it’s actually referred to as a “medical” redshirt, but yeah. I wonder if Boswell is hurt bad enough to miss like two months but theoretically could come back in March if they could get away with just sitting him and calling it season ending. Not sure how stringently that’s enforced. If he has to play under 30% of the games, he’s just under that number assuming postseason isn’t counted (9/31=0.29). If it’s 25% then he can’t redshirt

Fulky played in 10 games his freshman year and got a medical RS for a 6th season, so I'd imagine there's some precedence.

It’s 30% or less, and nothing in 2nd half of year, postseason games count, but in this case not needed. We play 31 regular season games, he’s played in 9, 30% would be more than 9…he qualifies.
