There were a few commentators I heard before the debate who theorized that there were those in the party or WH who knew how badly Biden would do, and they intentionally advocated for an early debate precisely to make the point to Biden and his defenders that he has to step aside.

The primary system is broken. It's not designed to make good decisions. It's designed to make fast decisions, with winner take all rules, etc. Neither party wants a convention fight. Neither party wants a long primary season. They want to quickly coronate somebody, anybody with a pulse, and then attack the other party/candidate.
