I think it is a good reminder than none of us should take exchanges here personally or seriously. In fact, BB posted a few days ago something very perceptive...most of us in the PF are bored and waiting for football season.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I'm not sure I could tell you the difference in those 2 things. I know I could google, but don't feel like it. When is it appropriate to use each of those?

This simplifies it:
For i.e. ("id est"), substitute "in other words" or "to clarify."

For e.g. ("exempli gratia"), substitute "for example."

Then you will know which one is appropriate.
