You are missing the point. I would LOVE to see those jobs come back here, and with all the cheap labor that Xiden has let in I am sure the sweatshops could be up and running before the end of football season. But there are numerous other sweatshop countries available to Tim Cook where he can make your iPhone. The Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia... there are even some right here in our own hemisphere that could do it. Why is China so ****ing special?
I may very well be missing your point but I know exactly what my point is.
What is special about China? My best guess is a large, cheap, semi-skilled labor force unlike anywhere else.
I would not like to see those jobs come back...at least not rapidly..maybe over a 30 year period but we'd have to either entice people to have more kids or have a large amount of immigration. If those jobs quickly came back, it would spark a wage war and lead to inflation like we've never seen.
The guys I know in manufacturing have tried to branch out from China...Thailand, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic....the output of all their non-China facilities combined is a fraction of what China can do. Also those jobs to Vietnam, etc would still have tariffs under Trump's plan. But they don't have the bodies to handle a fraction of it. They tell me the only China alternative they've had good success with is robotics/automation. It doesn't add any US jobs but it saves them freight. And as reliable as the Chinese labor for is, the robots never even take a bathroom break. Heck, you don't even need to turn the light on.
So in this magical scenario that Trump quickly runs all the jobs out of China, who could absorb them? India has the bodies, but they're buddies with Russia and a rich India is no better than a rich China. Sub-Saharan Africa could easily handle them if they were one united nation, but the current politics are so disjointed and corrupt it would never work.
China is a problem that will eventually take care of itself. Their one child policy has left them with an elderly population that is massively larger than the youth. In turn, this is sucking the younger generation into care giving and service work. In time the jobs in China will need to go elsewhere and we don't need a massive liberal sales tax on the good hard working American public for that to happen.
