2025 Target List

I wonder if Barnes and Co will be interested in 2025 Cade Capps from Stone Memorial. He was all state as a freshman. He is currently ranked in the top 5 for TN. 6'4 guard that can score at all three levels with unlimited range. I have seen him play and he has a chance to be power 5 IMO. Cade Capps | Prep Hoops

Wonder if there's any shot Jacob Ognacevic enters the portal and we'd be interested. He's 6'8 220, shoots 40 percent from 3, averages over 20 a game goes to Lipscomb so he's lived in Tennessee. Missed the 2023-24 season, has played 4 years but his first was the 20-21 covid year so he should have another year. He had 17/8 vs Kentucky and 16/6 vs Arkansas this year.

Yesterday at the game, I sat with my usual source and his friend who is a prominent donor. Here are a couple of observations that will probably make for some frustrating waiting.

All of Mashack, ZZ and Gainey would return for the NIL and play one more year if additional eligibility is granted. Slive and White have expressed their disappointment at the timeline, but they believe the NCAA is intentionally going to push the decision out until it is not actionable by current Seniors. They don’t like making changes that appear to benefit current Seniors. I don’t know why. It’s rotten.

We have had massive portal interest and may focus almost entirely there, and not signing many more HS recruits, given the level of experience in our losses. Several very good/very experienced guards have reached out through representatives. This isn’t surprising, but is a shift.

Burries has gotten a disproportionate NIL offer from another team and Barnes may shake his head no on that. This is the most difficult loss if they change tack. My friends seemed frustrated about this one, like it’s been a slog. I love this kid. It isn’t over, but there is some late hustling, and that can alienate CRB.

Mallory is probably 50/50 us. UVA is in his milk every day, and I’m sure he is getting back door info on the search. We are in a strong position if they can’t close him, but there is talk that he may commit regardless of where the search is publicly. His date is under two weeks away. At least we won’t sweat this long.

We aren’t in it with Ament now, though he had a great visit. He loved the visit, but he’s getting nuclear sized offers. No surprise there.

No one will answer the “will Barnes retire this (or next) Summer?” question. They are doing everything as though he’ll return and stay years, but the recent shift away from young players gives me pause. Could be a strategic shift, or they might be building a swing big now team.

As always, there will be an end of year meeting with every player. I assume he’ll push the old guys fully out of the nest. He’s not going to ask them to wait unless we get strong signals they can come back. Bishop wants to stay, but we might move on. Estrella has been down during the injury, but is almost fully recovered. He’ll work again with a private coach this Summer. His offense was great last Summer and hopefully he’ll pick up where he left off.

Given the core of bigs, this will be a very blue collar banging team. We have some very interesting portal options at guard, and Burries and Mallory remain options. We’re just going to have to ride out a lot of fan whining until the roster is built.

Dating back to Grant and Schofield there's always been a through line from team to team leading to this team. Heck Fulky played Grant/Schofield and with ZZ.

The leadership cupboard and culture setting type players is going to be barren this next year short of 5 year rule.

I don't doubt Barnes can build a talented team but will be a shock to the system from a culture standpoint next year if he does come back.

Interesting. I can’t say I’m surprised at the tactics of the NCAA, but it’s rather remarkable that they’re almost certainly going to pass a new eligibility rule that will benefit rising Seniors but not give that same respect to those playing now. Just gross behavior, IMO. I guess there is always the likelihood of it passes in the summer, we may see JM, ZZ, or JG return if things fall in place perfectly, but trusting the courts to rule in favor of any athlete these days feels like putting your eggs in a rotten basket.

The news about the extreme portal interest n encouraging, but it also gives me pause and has me wondering how much is genuine interest and how much is just players using us for NIL leverage.

The idea of not wanting to benefit seniors is odd because whenever they do make the decision, assuming it's passed, will benefit a class of seniors at some point. Why not now?

Just curious on Mallory, what’s the thought process behind 50/50 us?

He doesn’t have sophisticated representation. It’s just him and his family. They had a great visit, love the coaches and school. They are values driven and no nonsense. They told us it was between us and him staying home. He’s just very much a kid UVA wants to keep home, and he’s always wanted to go there.

No I am not confused. If you think every senior is not going to challenge anything you are foolish. All 3 can return even if in middle of summer. They aren’t getting drafted.
They have no basis to sue. They signed with clear rules and those rules are currently the same. Unless they change the rule, they’re out of luck, and out of eligibility. The Pavia case is entirely different because the juco rule was perceived as “not equal” to the five to play four rules. The NCAA will probably switch to 5 to play 5, but probably not before these guys need to hire agents for Europe etc.

Not to rehash, but if he picks there without a HC even being decided on that really is a total head scratcher. Idc if he’s being kept in the loop, until a HC is hired the thing can go any which direction.

This time, I completely agree. If he decides to stay without a signed coach, it’s not the best “basketball decision”. I’m obviously on the other side of the matter. I assume there’s a chance they have their guy, and he’s not in the tournament, but that seems low odds. As I said before, I think the announcement date is a positive for us. I said that to my friends yesterday and got a little pushback. They didn’t say I was wrong, but just said it’s still uphill.

Two other observations: My friends said the UVA list is down to two: McCollum and Odom. Obviously if it’s Odom, he already knows the Mallory family well.

Odd trivia: In 1990, Barnes accepted the UVA job, almost left Providence, and then withdrew after they refused to budge on academic admission.

If that's the case, then he just wants to go to UVA come hell or high water. Not much we can do to combat that. Signing with a school with no coach is just baffling, but it's a battle we were never going to win if it happens.

Read my reply to BTO. The word is Odom is 1a and McCollum is 1b. Odom has been recruiting him for two years.

They may want to get Odom signed and done because his name is getting floated with multiple jobs

Agree. He’s a great coach and a good fit. Timing probably isn’t our friend. Someone is going to snatch him soon.
My eye is on Hodgson at Alabama, White probably knows him a bit and he is an offensive guy coming from Oats tree. Killing it in 2 years at Arkansas State and was considered one of the nations top recruiters as an assistant, shark on the trail, young guy also.
