2025 Transfer Portal Thread

If true about BJ Freeman, sign me up based on my 2 minute scouting analysis of him lol. Good shooter with decent size who only got better once AZ State entered into Big 12 play, which was a very tough conference this year.
Doubt BJ Freeman is an option. Horrible character and off the court issues that I don’t see Barnes wanting.

Okay... what about these non mid-major guys

A: 6'7" 18.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.4 apg, 42.7% FG, 32.1% 3PT
B: 6'7" 19.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 2.0 apg, 43.9% FG, 33.6% 3PT
C: 6'6" 17.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 3.7 apg, 55.7% FG, 40% 3PT
D: 6'4" 11.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.0 apg, 45.6% FG, 39.5% 3PT
E: 6'6" 15.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.6 apg, 43.9% FG, 34.0 % 3PT
F: 6'8" 12.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.1 apg, 43.7% FG, 32.9% 3PT

Those are all wing options still available not coming from mid-major. I just didn't expect Rice to be the hard to close option of the 3 we're chasing...

Player A is Jamir Watkins. Your original post specified SG and Watkins is certainly better categorized as a wing or Small Forward. But I won't be pedantic about it.

Watkins was a senior. Rice a Sophomore.

Watkins played in the ACC. Rice played in the Big10.

Rice was rated 130 on Evan Miya. Watkins was rated 302.

Watkins not much of a floor spacer. That can present problems in certain lineup compositions.

Watkins actually has a negative Assist to Turnover ratio. Rice is 2/1 by comparison.

Watkins fouls 2x the rate Rice does.

And Watkins team was bad with him as the feature player and scorer.

Rice a better ball handler. Rice fills a need for backup ball handler if needed, which we will desparately need.

So I think Rice likely a better fit and probably a better overall player just in general.

Yea, I was trying to find stats on comparable players. I think his 37% from 3 stands out on a SS team. C (above) is a nice stat line.

I think for us Rice is a home run fit...him and Ja'Kobi have played together, he shoots it well, he plays defense and he's an east coast kid. We want him and I full understand of the guys in the portal he might be the best fit for us.

But I don't know why USC is chasing him so hard suddenly.

They've got Jerry Easter (8th ranked SG) signed. Alijah Arenas (1st ranked SG) as a hard commit. And they've already brought in Amarion Dickerson from Robert Morris...although he's more of a SF than a true SG.

I'm just going to assume that with Yates leaving and Arenas not actually signed they're trying to land Rice so they can bail on Arenas (being a HS top 10 player he's likely demanding more than Rice).

Who is C? Those are some impressive, stat-stuffing numbers.

Cedric Coward from Washington State...he's a bit of a risk though only played 6 games (thus those crazy stats) before having a season ending shoulder injury. But he also had just as impressive numbers the year before at Eastern Washington...

Ah, gotcha. I knew there had to be a caveat in there somewhere. He still might be worth the risk, but I’m guessing those stats were against inferior, early season opponents.

I get the feeling USC is an agent connection and just poker, but that’s a guess. It’s too out of the blue. My knife fight comment is about Willard being a lunatic at the end.

Ahh...yeah reading the tea leaves I think USC is playing poker with Rice and Arenas...which in turn is now pulling us in as well.

I think if Arenas was signed they wouldn't even be talking to Rice.

A guy I wouldn't mind looking at if we miss out on Rice or Freeman.

Tyler Harris from Washington. 6'8" Guard, 11.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg shot 49.2% FG and 49.5% 3PT just a Sophomore too. Played in 30 games and started 27

Not sure he could be a backup ball handler like Rice.
