21 Point Face Mask Penalty

The simple point was that "if" the unfortunate inadvertent face mask didn't happen, what would the game have been like??
"IF" Howard throws the ball a foot right the previous play it's probably a TD. "IF" the roughing call, that wasn't roughing, wasn't called what happens? "IF" they didn't put in their backups at the start of of the 4th how worse would it have been? That's why I hate "IFs".

It was more of the same that’s always killed us. Refuse to cover the flat. Can’t cover a crossing route. DBs getting toasted. Severely lacking linebacker talent. Offensively the horrid playcalling and qb play continued.
Good teams continue to take advantage of this. Our linebackers can’t cover and opposing OC’s have feasted on it.

Sorry. That penalty wasn't going to change the outcome in this one. We were completely outclassed by that roster.
Yet another captain literal who can’t see how a snowball effect happens

They went into full blood lust mode after that first drive. If our defense stops them and we ge the ball. And we score. Their defense doesn’t think they’re a bunch of world beaters. They just came off the loss to Michigan and it’s in their heads that maybe they’re about to get beat by an SEC team.

Instead they got in our heads and it became the opposite effect.

Heupel shouldn’t have deferred.

It's actually not that hard to figure out. Ohio States OC had a great game plan versus our defense. Take advantage of the flats. They have the athletes to do that. There are 3 teams in college football that have the most talent. Those 3 are Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia. If you come in with a poor game plan against any of those then you are toast, it's that simple. This isn't the first time Banks has been slow to adjust during a game.

Such a shame that an inadvertent face mask penalty on Ohio States first drive wound up costing us 21 immediate points, and probably the ball game. We had them stopped on their first drive (which is what CJH and team pray about) and well, this is a "what if" the hand didn't connect with the face mask question? Momentum means a lot in sports and my gut says that while the eventual outcome might have been the same, the game could have been (much) closer.

Proud of this team and the coaches for another 10 Win Season. Now we have to work on getting considerably better for next Fall because you can bet that Bama, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and the rest of our opponents will be improving their rosters and coaching staffs.

Go Vols
They would’ve punted and we’d of had more time to schedule a punt. Did you watch the game?

That’s total BS . It’s 1st quarter and basically a whole game left to play.

If you let 1 bad play cost you 21 points and probably the game,, then you’re a weak , fragile a$$ team.

Move on, buck up and make some stops!
It did give them some early momentum right off the bat

I get what you’re saying. We let em off the hook on that first drive.

They basically took it as house money and got aggressive. We were back peddling the rest of the game. It was probably one of the best pressures all game.

If we stop them, the Vols may settle in actually. After that play we never got our feet under us, and was playing on skates the rest of the way. The penalties eventually bite ya.

This is absolutely the way I looked at this inadvertent and unfortunate face mask penalty. It through us off kilter and we never recovered.

Momentum wins athletic competitions 24/7. Best team on the field are not always the victors. We could have rattled off 21 points on our first three possessions.

If we got that ball and scored 7, who on this planet could go back in time and correctly predict the outcome? We lost our mojo - and without it, we didn't play well. With it? Who knows??

I agree that it was an unfortunate penalty but saying it cost us 21 points is a stretch. With or without that penalty, we still couldn't cover their WRs and stop them until they started substituting their backups early in the 4th quarter

We had no answer for the best WR corps in FBS so we were not gonna win that game..BUT there were some glaring penalties that weren't called. They cracked not 1 but 2 (TWO) of Nicos helmets with helmet to helmet shots but no flags were thrown. Absolute BS. We never stood a shot with that officiating crew unless we were able to completely overwhelm OSU...which we don't have the talent to do. Coming off the Michigan loss they weren't gonna be broken mentally either. We ran into a perfect storm and got throttled. Oh well, it happens.

Lucky to have CJH and this staff, as well as a roster that has improved dramatically with the addition of these 24 and 25 recruiting classes. We will be as loaded as anyone in a couple years and probably make the playoffs 50% of the time the way things are going...which is excellent at ANY school. Every recruiting class has been better than the last for the last 4 years. Love it. Go VOLS.

I’d normally say the same but it could have been devastating for Michigan. With all the noise around OSU since the Michigan game and all the orange in the stands, that stadium might have sounded totally different if we get the ball back and score.
I know it’s “ifs and buts”, you can’t deny that was a HUGE momentum shift.

I don’t think there was a holding call made on either team …..
