'21 TN PG Kennedy Chandler (Tennessee commit 08.14.20)

Rodney Woods and Danny Shultz were two other really good PGs, but probably not even top 100 recruits if they even ranked them in that era. Bill Hann and Dickie Johnston, too. Chandler would be the GOAT PG signee and it wouldn't be close. Big gap back to CJ Watson, Tony Harris, Tyrone Beaman, Bone etc.

Jimmy England has to be up there, too, I'd think. Not sure they ranked kids back in the mid-late 60s.

He was more of an off guard that played with Hann and Johnston. Bertelkamp and Allan Houston were ranked pretty high, but not really PGs coming in. Mike Edwards was probably a highly ranked guard... but again not really a PG.

I think that Tony Harris was the closest to Chandler and was anticipated to be a very good true PG.

Probably true. He was definitely a scoring guard.

I think that the lineup England's first (sophomore) year (68-69?) was Hann at PG, England and Justus on the wings, and Bobby Croft and Don Johnson at center and forward. Actually, I think that Jim Woodall was the starting center (or power forward) backed up by Bobby Croft or a forward backed up by Johnson. Johnston replaced Hann at starting PG a year later. I'm not sure who got most of Justus' minutes, but Mike Edwards took guard minutes 2 years later. Kosmalski and Lloyd Richardson played a lot of minutes. So did Larry Robinson and John Snow. I'd have to study Sports Reference dot com to see who played with Jimmy England (and DJ). I think that Rodney Woods came after England had graduated. RW and LK might be the same class. Rudy Kinard and Greg Hawkins played a good bit... but GH was a year or 2 later. They'd pretty much just go 6 or 7 deep in that era.

Denton Jones was going to be a very good guard in the early 1970s. But he had a really bad head injury and they were going to make him wear protective headgear, so he quit.

I wish there was more video from the 60s and 70s. It's a shame that video tape was so expensive and was routinely recorded over.

Edit: I thought that Jim Woodall was older than Croft. He was actually in the class after Bobby Croft with England, Johnson, and Johnston. Kerry Myers was a guard in Bobby Croft's class that was a regular. Steve Hirschorn was another guard that was a regular. Maybe was a JUCO. He was in the England/DJ/DJ/JW class.

Edit p2: Hirschorn was actually listed on the 68/69 roster as a sophomore along with JE, DJ, DJ, etc.

Eddy Voelker also played many minutes as a guard in the early to mid 70s. I think he played a lot of point guard.

I love it when we have outstanding guards. We had some mediocre rosters with Devoe (not speaking of Tony White, Fred Jenkins, Tyrone Beaman, or Michael Brooks though... they were very good players). Too bad that Gary Carter left prematurely.

Tony Harris and Isiah Victor were O'Neill's best recruits while he was coach at Tennessee.

I think the reply was about Jimmy England. Tony Harris was a PG that was very much a scoring threat.

Brandon Wharton, CJ Black, Aaron Green, and Hathaway were some of KOs best. Alico Dunk makes the All Name team.

Harris and Victor actually only played on Jerry Green's teams. I've always heard that Doug Dickey and KO's main issue was that DD wouldn't let KO play IV as a true freshman. No doubt KO helped getting Tony Harris to sign.

Schultz was the best PG I have seen at Tennessee. He was spectacular and came to UT from Hiwassee JC in Madisonville Tennessee.
