$2M Buyout for Pearl

It is to settle a potential lawsuit. You can say all you want about "no contract," but the course of dealings between the parties might say otherwise. Bruce coached this season, right? And, I assume UT paid him for those services, right?

Better to pay some money now, put this issue completely behind us, and move forward with getting a new coach and dealing with the NCAA.

My guess is that they will keep Hamilton around at least until the NCAA issue reached a final resolution. No need to change horses in midstream. My onle issue with that is that it means we will have to endure another Hamilton hire. He doesn't exactly have a good track record in that regard.

Trust me. Hamilton will announce the hire. He will not make the final choice on his own by any stretch.

This makes sense for a few reasons:
1. Get on with the search sooner than later as NCAA penalties won't be announced until after June which technically would trigger the decision on BP.
2. Avoid law suit and messy seperation as BP could have a case if fired prior to NCAA rulings in June.
3. Recognition for a job well done in taking UT hoops to places it had not been before which looks good for future hire of prominent coach prospects.
4. Leverage over Bruce and message management. I'm sure there will be conditions attached to the payments that BP keep his yapper shut and not say anything disparaging towards UT.

According the Go Vols Xtra poll there at least 10k folks who would rather by a Keep BP t-shirt which might help pay for the moving truck.

Haha. That is pathetic. Thousands of dollars that could actually be used to help people. Shameful. Peopke sepnding $ to vocalize support for a millionaire who may kill the program. I am positive that if I lost my job, Bruce would help me out. He would help us all out, he's one of us. Say what you will about the past eras of UT bball, this is actually the most embarrassed I have been as a UT bball fan.

Seriously though, if he is released due to the letter issued to UT by the NCAA, he should get zero. But due to legal threat of action, that won't happen. Pay and move on.

Very true. I guess I really meant that He would most difinitely NOT have much input in this case in particular.

High level meeting with Fulmer, discussing potential changes in staff and AD...asked him if he would consider donating the reminaing buyout back into UT coffers.

Phil is trying to figure out what this means.

Why would any coach not want to come to TN and coach. If it doesn't work out, they will be a millionaire when they leave. We must have the record for the amount of money we have paid coaches to leave and not coach.

Wonder if Jim Tressel is kicking in to the Pearl fund so he won't have to suffer any penalties when the NCAA slaps his wrist?

If all this happens, I hope they stipulate he can't coach in the SEC. If he doesn't get the big penalty, he might come back with $2 mil and as the coach of Arkansas. Then he would beat us yearly like a red headed stepchild.

But I hope he stays as coach.

I'm thinking the NCAA is giving Pearl a 1-3 year show-cause penalty, which will mean he can't coach in the NCAA during that time frame. I think that is the primary reason UT decided to part ways. At least the one that makes sense to me.
