3-4 vs. 4-3

There are two variations of the 3-4 Defense. The two gap scheme that Coach Sunseri tried to install is similar to the one used at Pittsburgh by Dick LeBeau.

The Dick LeBeau 3-4

You'll sometimes hear it referred to as the 3-4 Over/Under.

The second variation is an one gap scheme used by Wade Phillips the DC of the Houston Texans.

The Bum Phillips 3-4

UCLA under Rick Neuheisel was a 4-3 team, under Jim Mora they became a one gap 3-4. They weren't a great defense, but they were better than Tennessee. The problem for the next HC is that you have players that were recruited for these two different types of defense.

Now that it's all said and done and we've suffered through one of the worst (if not THE worst) defenses UT has ever had, do ya'll think that anything would have been different this season if we had remained a 4-3 instead of switching to the 3-4? Keep in mind that in 2011 we were 28th in total defense, and we returned most of our defense in 2012. I think that if we had had even a serviceable defense this season we would have been in the running for the East. Would staying in a 4-3 have helped us at all?

And also which defense do you think we will come out in in 2013?

If I remember correctly, Georgia had a rough time the 1st year they switched to the 3-4..........their defense is not too shabby now.

I can't remember UGA's exact ranking in the first year after they switched, but it was not NEARLY as rough as ours

The difference is that UGA recruits guys like Jarvis Jones. UT hasn't had an elite pass rusher in years. Until we get personnel comparable to players at Bama, LSU, UGA, UF, and even USC we might as well run a 4-3.

Wilcox's defense did better last year with essentially the exact same players. Think about that for a minute. A total defense ranked nationally somewhere in the 30's probably has us at 8-4 which is what many of us predicted preseason. Dooley's defensive switch cost this team dearly and he paid for the mistake with his job.

I think Sal called the wrong defenses on purpose!! It was all a apart of his plan from the start to make the UT defense worse and have dooley fired

UGA has not done well with the 3-4. They gave up a lot of yards this year, including 300+ yards rushing to Bama. UGA had a very fortunate season IMO.
In college, simpler is better. You don't have the hours to put into a complicated scheme. Bama could win in a 3-4. 4-3, 5-2 or whatever else you want. Their talent is simply that good.
