5 Facts That Everyone Should Know

I think what we put people away for is nuts. That said, having a for-profit prison is not a problem in my mind.

This.

I thought the link was primarily about violent crime. I'm not the most soft-hearted bloke when it comes to those who would, with unambiguous intent, harm or kill others. Beyond that it seems we could do a lot better in many cases than just throwing people in a cage.

1. I have to disagree strongly. Justice is not a market; it is a preposterous notion. Again, like health care, a penal system is something to be used as little as possible. That is anathema to the profit-motive. Moreover, privatization tomfoolery of the penal system goes a long way to explain this:

And that graph is an abomination to the Old Values of the American Republic. It should rightly be regarded as one of our deepest shames - and that is before we get into exactly who is incarcerated.

Thank you, Reagan.

The war on drugs sure was/is effective.

O rly? Business was boomin last time I ventured to the north side of town.

I hear the Mexican border is booming too. If Reagan was the president economists loved, I'm surprised none of them enlightened him as to how his drug crusade would pan out.

The war on drugs just like crack and aids Reagan's big ***** you to American poor people

Reagan gave AIDS to poor people?

Good to know.

Also, your punctuation and syntax denote the following interpretation of your statement:

The war on drugs, just like the war on crack and the war on AIDS: Reagan's big **** you to the American poor.

Hey all, thanks for linking to my site and stuff. Happy to see that it's a catalyist for discussion on stuff that people typically don't know about.

I tried registering when I first saw the hits coming in from VolNation but it just got activated, so here I am...

A few thoughts on the list:

1. No problem with for-profit prison system. If the Justice system overall is getting a kick-back then I have a problem. Otherwise I see no problem with it.
I have no problem with there being a private prison syste if they are able to do a better job for cheaper, but the problem imo is when they start meddling with the legislative process to increase profits. Mandatory sentencing laws should be passed to make us safer, not because empty beds waste money.

2. We used to have 3 networks and they were the vast source of broadcast news. Now with the Internet I would bet that media fragmentation is at least as strong as it was historically if not more so.
True, but the majority of the public still treats the broadcast news as their primary source of information.

3. In the 1950s...hell, in the 1900s we did... and in the 1850s we did... I think the teaser for this factoid really stretches the impact of what the FBI does.
I meant to include this either in #3 or a different article, but the feds still do their best to resist any sort of change from occuring. Just this past year they carried out a series of raids against peace activists, without any probable cause. Just "looking" for connections to terrorism. Alot of people suspect its a form of intimidation. In 2009, Homeland Security issued a confidental memo to law enforcement to "look out" for Ron Paul supporters, Libertarians, that sort of thing. A member of the Missori law enforcement leaked the memo and it can be read in its entirety. An apology has since been issued to the groups targeted. It's also suspected that this was another form of intimidation.

4. See #3
I think we can all agree that MK-Ultra was some shady ****, and it's sad that was successfully kept a secret for so long. I woulda suspected that someone would have protested against it and leaked the info far before. But it's only a small part of unethical human experimentation in the US.

5. See #3 and #4 and add to that the fact it was not implemented.
I guess we could say that it's never been openly admitted to (although truthers will bring up the Gulf of Tonkin where its a little troubling)... but the plan itself was kept secret until 1997. Odds are if it was ever implemented or admitted to, it wouldn't be our generation that finds out about it.

I'm asked alot why I made the site and it boils down to that I think we need more transparency because when you allow things to be done in secret, you're going to have shady things happen. As a Libertarian I'd like to see the role of the federal government greatly reduced... but I'd be happy with it at least operating with more transparency and accountability because I think that's better for all of us. Lots of times when you're reading this stuff you can substitute the word "terrorist" for "communist" and it seems awfully familiar, which isn't cool.

If you got the time, the Washington Post did a investigation called Top Secret America which I think is pretty relevant: Top Secret America | washingtonpost.com

less than 10% of the US watches the nightly news on all 3 networks combined
