Hatcher's time has come and gone.

Morris is a good OTB inclusion. Del Rio has been mentioned several times before now.

If we are talking outside the box:
Rob Ryan
Marvin Lewis
Eric Mangini
Mark Helfrich
Mike Riley

Lewis? Mangini? Good lord. Meets the requirements on otb though.

I always liked Mooch. He has a great passion for the game. Not sure if he is cut out for this though.

He got a raw deal when TO destroyed the 49ers. They let one diva WR force them to get rid of Jerry Rice, Mooch, and Jeff Garcia. Then he turned around and left anyway!!!

I'm not sure if Mooch could cut it as a college coach either. I don't know how well he could recruit, but he deserved to continue coaching somewhere better than Detroit.

But still make sense (kind of);

1) Bob Stoops. This is the home run hire now that the Gruden dream has died. Honestly this is who I have rooted for since it became apparent a change was in the offing; basically since the UF debacle. He is from the Bill Snyder coaching tree and that man can obviously get it done, he has coached at UF and knows recruiting in the South, he's a big name that would make a splash. I have many close friends that are huge OU fans and by all accounts his tenure there has grown stale. They all think he has done less with more than any other coach in America. I think the Hill is the fresh start he needs.

2) Chris Hatcher. Not a splash by any means as he is currently at Murray State, but I believe this guy is a winner plain and simple. He knows the South inside and out. In his first year at Murray State Hatcher led the Racers to a 5–3 record in the Ohio Valley Conference (tied for fourth place), and a 6–5 record overall. 2010 was the Racers first winning season since 2004. Went 7-4 in the 2011 season. The guy can get it done in my opinion.

3) Matt Mitchell. Current HC at Grand Valley State. Let's face facts the Lakers can spot coaching talent and CMM is 19-5 since taking over. The previous coach left to join Brain Kelley at ND. It would be a huge step up and he's probably not ready, but GVSU coaches dont seem to fail.

4) Jack Del Rio. I have no idea why, but I think he could win in college.

5) Raheem Morris. Morris spent one season with the Kansas State Wildcats in 2006, as defensive coordinator under then-head coach Ron Prince. He helped improve the defense in several statistical categories including total defense, scoring defense and pass defense. He helped the Wildcats upset the #4 Texas Longhorns during the 2006 season. Big name and a defensive minded coach.

Let's hear your list

Where are you getting the Gruden dream has died. Its as far from death as you could possibly get. These lists are very entertaining and meaningless, Gruden is our next coach. Del Rio would be my next choice but Stoops underchieves in the Big 12, the other 2 no names would not sell tickets at all and we just think our recruiting sux right now. Strong would be a better option than anyone except Del Rio and maybe Morris, althoufh he is better suited to be a DC, which he could and should be under Gruden once he is announced.

There is an extremely reliable source on Volquest, a gentleman that I know personally, who has now stated that Gruden has decided to go the NFL route. I guess he did his research and made his decision. I honestly expect him to be in San Diego next year.

I doubt he is going the NFL route. Too many much more reliable guys on here say differently. If he wanted to get back in the NFL he would have already, and he definitely isnt going to San Diego.

What about Bill O'Brien? He has actually done a nice job at penn state through all the mess (6-3). Have to think he would jump at the idea as well.

holy... Did you just say Bob Stoops is a smash hire and his tenure at OU is stale in the same paragraph?

No thanks, an underachieving coach coming from a now mediocre big 12 conference is not a home run hire. It's a disgrace.

Uh.

I don't think he would move. He is a smart guy though.

Really? I would think he'd love to make a move with all the coming sanctions. He of course has it made there and all kinds of security for years to come, but that will just be a mess in the coming years.

You can't be serious. He went in knowing there would be sanctions.

He also didn't have any other head coaching offers at that time. A head coaching job with sanctions vs. no head coaching job does not always yield the same answer as a head coaching job with sanctions vs. a head coaching job without sanctions. Plus the sanctions were worse than most were expecting when he took the job.

Jim Leavitt. Former coach of USF for 13 seasons and currently with the 49ers.

30 plus years experience in coaching and he will have built in recruiting ties in Florida and a much bigger stick to carry as a head coach of an SEC team.

2 losing seasons in 13 years at a program he literally built from the ground up. He is a defensive minded coach who had some dynamic offenses for the Bulls. Took down WVU routinely in their heyday under Rich Rod.

His firing at USF is in the past by 2 years and the kid's dad who instigated its was charged with grand theft. The whole thing was shady from the get go as to whether he actually did it or not. And coaches normally don't get 2.75 million dollar settlements from the school after getting fired.

Harbaugh thought enough of him to give him a job for a Super Bowl contender.

He is a helluva lot more stable than Petrino.

Mazalhan. Offensive genius doing great at arky state could bring a good DC and we got something.

The one I would watch here is Del Rio. Payton is playing in Denver now, if his name starts to appear it is for 2 reasons.

1) PM has been playing middleman and thinks it is a good hire.
2) Del Rio is better than most options.

BTW: Del Rio is a defensive coach, he can laterally keep the offense in tact and just hire defensive people. We would essentiually hire a major upgrade in defense day 1. He also knows the south and the middle floirda. Would be a great hire if Gruden was out.

That was a whole lot of rambling. Some people were talking death penalty. It's safe to say that the sanctions were about what one could have expected.

That was a whole lot of stupid. You acted like the idea of Obrien was preposterous, and when proven false all you can do is refer to it as rambling. Your also wrong on your last claim as when he was hired there was a lot of debate as to whether or not the NCAA would do anything at all, due to the question of whether or not this was an NCAA issue or not. It was not until this last summer that serious speculation of the death penalty or something close to it started to arise from reputable sources.

This would be a fine choice IMO.

Thanks.

I wanted him over Kiffin in 2009 but he had already spurned Alabama and some other suitors to remain loyal to the program he helped build.

They didn't reciprocate that loyalty and, by all outward appearances, he got a raw deal.

The guy can flat out coach and has the track record to prove it. No way of knowing how successful he would be here but he'd be a significant upgrade over Dooley.

I would be on board with that hire...And my long shot I would personally like but many might not is Paul Johnson...I would LOVE to see that exciting rushing offense come to UT...Get himself a good DC and We would be hard to stop.
