once dools is long gone... the Doolaiders and yes even the people that were "on the fence" about him will look back and think... "WTF was I thinking?!?!" Once you're removed from the emotion of the situation and the overwhelming desire to "not be wrong" about him has diminished greatly, you'll find yourself in a weird place of wondering, again, "WTF was I thinking?!?!?"

This feeling will be compounding exponentially if we make a great hire and get back to winning football games.

You’re not alone, other fan bases that have experienced this same situation:

  • UK Bball fans, they were as divided on the to fire or not to fire Gillispie... enter Calipari... Gillispaiders look foolish now.
  • Bama fans, many wanted to keep Shula Jr. based on 2005 success and his lineage, enter Saban... Shulaiders look foolish now.
  • ND fans, many thought the Weis buy out was too much... and pleaded Weis just needed more time... enter Brian Kelly... Weisanators look foolish now.

And 5 years from now when you graduate, you will realize how much of a moron you were for using the word Doolaiders.

I guess those Auburn folks are glad they got rid of Tuberville (at least while Cam was there). HA HA

Ummm, nope. Someone had to take the job. Someone had to rebuild the roster, restore discipline, and effectively stop the bleeding. Dooley may not be able to coach on gameday well enough to keep the job. But he will have served a critical function.

If he is eventually nothing more than a great set up man for the next coach... then as far as the program is concerned it was a "great" hire. It would have been worse than stupid to have fired him before this year which I think you've advocated.

Most of us just want to win. WE hoped that Dooley would do it. Guys like you were the ones concerned that you might be wrong.

You aren't either.

Many programs have made bad fires as well as bad hires that have sank them.

being one of those "on the fence" guys, I can tell you right now I won't be thinking that in five years. See sjt's post above for many reasons why.

I have no idea what you said because I was so perplexed that you actually used bullet points in a message board post.

"Sank them". I will admit when Dooley took office, we were the Titanic of sank ships. The bad thing is that here we still are, two miles at the bottom of the SEC ocean, only three years later

Here is the flaw with your logic. This is a huge IF. Trust me, they fire CDD without a home run hire lined up and go through a similar process as last it can and will get a whole lot worse. I heard alot of comments like this in 08.

Most of the chicken littles on here will still be whining about who the coach is and saying that he can't coach. Some people just can't enjoy being happy.

Now having said that. I'm not at all happy with our record right now, but I am happy with our improvements in certain areas. That has come from Dooley and his recruits and staff. Can he get us over the hump? I don't now. Only time will tell and I think he will get at least another year.

This as well. I cringe at the thought of a guy worse than Dooley. And don't kid yourself; it can be worse.

It's not like I was ever convinced Dooley would get it done. It was more like, "this is the guy they hired. He's going to get 3 or 4 years regardless of my opinion. I hope it works out." For that reason, I won't have the feeling you described.

Ever heard of "third times a charm"?

That's my scientific hypothesis.

Calipari may end up bitting Uk in the hiney
Saban couldn't do better than 7-6 with shula's kids.
ND needs to join a real conference.

And lets say dooley is let go at end of season. We get one of your coaching picks. Doesn't work out. Meanwhile dooleys picked up by another program in four years is winning championships. We're still in the toilet. How'd that work for ya?

What ifs are for people paralyzed with fear.

Do'ers get it done.

I HOPE that CDD has success in the future. I imagine that the ACC or one of the BIG's would be a perfect fit.

NOT IN THE SEC BUDDY.

He has already proven that.

If we are sitting in the same position we are today in 4 years then I will have lost total confidence in the boosters, AD, and the coaching staff.

Assuming that is possible, there has been no reason to believe that even if Dooley is able to go somewhere else and be successful that he could have done the same thing at UT. It is possible that he is a bad fit for whatever reason. It is also possible that he is just a mediocre head coach that needs to go to the Big East or a lower tier conference and be the AD/coach again.

5 years from now, I don't know if Coach Dooley will be the head coach- my thoughts are that he will get another year. I do know that Kiffin and Coach Fulmer left him with a difficult situation. Tennessee is an elite job, but when we hired Coach Dooley, the time of the year Kiffin left, coaches were not jumping at the chance to coach at Tennessee. If Coach Dooley is not the coach 5 years from now, and I have the honor to be on this earth 5 years from now, I will respect the fact that Coach Dooley stabilized an elite program at a fragile time. I share the concerns of the "fire Dooley" crowd. I understand that expectations at Tennessee are high. I don't like the instability of the coaching staff. I don't like the move to the 3-4 in a pivotable year. The kicking game has driving me nuts the last few years. I just want to convey that the year will play out and Coach Dooley will be evaluated on if he can restore this great program back to where it belongs- and I'm sure he knows that he needs to do it in a timely manner.

When Dooley was hired I wasn't impressed. But given the situation, I knew the reasoning behind the decision. Dooley came here for the money, I'm convinced of it. His contract is his biggest accomplishment! I will support the team, but Dooley will get called out when he's outcoached. So you can expect to hear something in about 80% of our games.

I think we have a lot of near sighted fans here. They look at the near instant success that the Sabans and Caliparis had and wonder why the same thing hasn't happened to us. Elite coaches weren't lining up to come coach for a program facing NCAA heat, constant off the field issues with players, and a huge slump in recruits. Dooley has run a clean program and has actually had the testicular fortitude to cut ties with thugs like Janzen Jackson and Da'rick Rodgers. I respect the hell out of him for risking his job to do the right thing. I'm not saying he's (still) the best option for us, I'm saying that for the time he came in he was the right man for the job. As far as Notre Dame is concerned call me when they have the same success in the SEC.
