Below sea level or not, Florida gets hammered every year sometimes more than once and rebuilding is never an issue. You cannot rip thousands of people out of their homes and tell them they can never come back!!!!

In that case, let those people and businesses who want to move back to New Orleans provide for themselves. The Federal Government should also not insure this gamble.

I also do not believe that Florida residents should receive Federal Disaster Relief, because a hurricane in Florida, an Earthquake in California, a flood on the Mississippi...these things are ordinary and should be expected, therefore they are not disasters.

Well then no one should ever get help again. There are tornadoes, fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, ect everywhere. That is the stupidest thing I ever heard. I lived in New Orleans area for 30 years and I never got 6 feet of water in my house but ONCE. To me that is not ordinary!!!
But dont worry, I will not be using any of your tax dollars because I had insurance.

If private insurance agencie want to cover you, then fine. However, my tax dollars should not go to help out.

As an insurance professional I'm sad to say . . . Good luck with that. Insurance companies are literally running for the hills to get away from coastal exposures.

I lived in New Orleans for 8 years, and it was some of the best times I ever had. However, putting money into rebuilding it is like putting it into quicksand. New Orleans is and will continue to sink, and there is not much we can do to stop it. Mother nature usually wins out.

Then that should tell people who want to live there something...it is a gamble. The government should not provide for people to gamble on where they are living.

Well we will have to agree to disagree. Everyone has their opinions but unfortunately its not black and white. I also feel you can have an opinion but not truely understand unless you have lived it and I dont wish that on my worst enemy.

Please don't tell me that I do not truly understand. Do Hurricane Camille, Huricane Katrina, and Pass Christian mean anything to you? Biloxi was never the same after Camille and just over 30 years later, Biloxi was pretty much wiped off the map. New Orleans was lucky to avoid devastation from Camille. However, smart people will realize that there are other places to live besides 5 feet below sea level, putting trust in an antiquated levee system that, even if reinforced, still will not hold back a category 4 or 5 hurricane. I do not wish a lot of things on people, however, I do not expect to pay out of my pocket when accepted risks come to fruition.

If you want to move back to New Orleans, so be it. If someone wants to privately insure that decision, then have at it. However, do not ask 250 million Americans to contribute to the rebuilding of that city.

Biloxi means alot to me and they too will rebuild. I do not plan to go back to New Orleans because I had the means to get out and start my life completly over. Some people are not so lucky. That is my point and again we will just agree to disagree. Have a great day!

Are you referring to the people who lived in government subsidized housing, received monthly checks from the government, and refused to get on buses prior to the Hurricane? My heart is bleeding...

Not completely but starting a totally different discussion.................they were not offered any buses!!! Now, they decided that they will use them next time. Man they are smart!! All the buses stayed in a parking lot and got flooded. All Im saying is I actually got lucky and made money off the deal and came out ahead. Not that in the long run it was worth loosing everything I owned but I came out ahead. Not alot of people ca say that.

You should search for news articles that were printed in the two days prior to Katrina, and see that buses were deployed to low income neighborhoods.
