Food banks: Middle class in Orlando using food banks more - OrlandoSentinel.com

Over 16% of the country. Astounding.

I'd say that maybe you guys are right and we are on our way to some rebellion. But it may not come from the patriots fed up with government regulation. It may come from those that watch the government bail out banks who give out millions or billions in bonuses, while they struggle to feed their families.

and by that you mean people who want their gov't to do more while they do less? Bet it will be put down pretty quick

Henry Bereks, a 36-year-old Oviedo artist, is one of them. Though a physical disability has kept him from working full time for years,

and what kind of disability keeps an "artist" from working? Reminds me of the foodies who were complaining gov't assistance wasn't enough for gourmet meals

I would account laziness to 1/2 of the 16% or pride getting in the way of taking a lesser job. If I were starving, I would shovel cow ish to feed my family regardless of my education level

You draw a false dichotomy.

If this isn't proof positive that liberal economic ideals FAIL... I am not sure what it will take. Remember, the Dems were in charge of Congress when the biggest bail outs and "stimulus" spending occurred.

It is the liberal/Keynesian idea that gov't should engage in "engineering" the economy to get certain outcomes considered "favorable".

If I and most conservatives had our way, gov't would not be subsidizing businesses or favoring one company over another. It would not have the power to grant tax breaks or loopholes to cronies. It would have far less ability to regulate things not directly related to the public interest (like product safety or environmental). TARP would have never occurred. In a free market, it is absolutely necessary that companies that become inefficient and bloated fail to make way for better replacements.

This is the PROGRESSIVE ideal coming to full flower.

children don't get the kind of micronutrients and proper protein they need. If you're eating a bag of potato chips because it's the cheapest thing you can get, that's not very healthy."

Anyone buy potato chips lately. They ain't cheap.

i love the fast food is cheap argument. i 100% guarantee you i can make a far healthier meal for at least 2/3s price of mcdonalds for a family of 4. canned tomatoes and beans and rice aren't expensive.

That's the problem, it requires you doing it.

so LG what do you think is really the cause of this? Is more gov't intervention the answer? Are all of these 50mil really doing everything in their power to provide food for their families but just can't do it?

I don't think 16% is a large enough group to start a revolution...especially when most of that group doesn't have the go-getter mentality.

the problem with the survey is teh way it's phrased. it's stated as those "can't afford enough food to meet their basic needs at least some of the time." hell i know a lot of college students that fit in that category. are they starving and should they be on food stamps?

Lady told me once that she needed government assistance cause she had been unemployed for over a year. Felt sorry for her till 10 minutes later she admitted that she could get a job but didn't like her field and didn't want to go back to school. She was gonna let the government take care of her.

i'm just failing to see how you are struggling to eat if you are fatter than the rich people.

Cause the only things they can buy with food stamps are frozen pizzas, pasta and potatos. Carb rich foods and they don't have the money to join a gym. At least this was the argument made to me when I asked a similar question.

Being fat has to do with food choices and activity too. So are they fat causing them to be slothful resulting in being poor or are they slothful causing them to be fat and poor?

Food deserts... the white man doesn't want supermarkets that sell fruits and vegetables in inner city neighborhoods. All they want to sell in the hood are Debbie cakes and malt liquor.

Michelle Obama Takes On Food Deserts (VIDEO)

they need to go to the mexican markets. great produce and cheaper than the chains. if you are lucky they even have marinaded carne asada for sale. :)
