Great share story! Thanks.Met Charlie at the Victory party for Bill Haslams first run for Governor. Didn't even introduce myself, just walked up and said, "he didn't make it." Charlie smiled and said they were lying on the ground and Cannon said, ""I made it.." Charlie said I dont think so.
Unfortunately the Vols lost the next 3 games to Ole Miss, UK and Vandy or this game would be ranked even higher in the list of great Vol victories.
In my home town in far North East Tennessee, I could not get WNOX from Knoxville at night. Therefore, would listen to WLAC in Nashville and The other 50,000 watt stations around the Nation. I remember listening to the LSU foo games and the Kentucky basketball games in the late 1940s and 1950s. We could not afford a TV and radio and newspapers were our access to news and sports. I also remember that we had to have stamps to purchases gas and food. We raised our own vegetables as well as our own beef, milk, pork, chickens and eggs etc, I learned to fly fish when I was about 5 years old and caught a lot of Red Eyes and smallmouth bass. I was so fortunate to have grownup when I did. It set the stage for my future life.Yep, began listening to LSU night games in the late 50’s I guess. Pick of Dixie football. Only one college game on tv then, was usually big 10 teams. Vols not often. Came in clear.
I knew all of these players and spent a great deal of time with many of them. Back in the 50s, the weight room was about the size of our current great romm and was poorly equipped. Just imagine what kind of athletes they would have been with today’s weight rooms and S&C coaches. Players back then were as tough as nails.View attachment 695459

When I look back at these old programs and media guides one of the first thing that sticks out is the size of the players back then.
thanks to my dad i once had autographs of all the Vols on the 1960 roster. I was 10 that year and had been fan since 57View attachment 695459

Our very best teams in history all have had one thing in common. Badass defensesNovember 7, 1959, undefeated, #1 ranked, defending National Champions LSU with Heisman winner Billy Cannon comes to town. Vols win 14-13 in one of the epic upsets in Vol History.
Cannon stopped on 2 point conversion by Wayne Grubb, Bill Majors and Charley Severance. He absolutely did not make it. How do I know, I was sitting on about the 40th row in Section A with one of the best seats in the House. What a day for a 12 year old Vol fan.
