4 losing seasons in a row for the first time since, what, 1903-6?

team with the 2nd highest total of SEC titles all time, winning at least one per decade throughout most of the 20th century, has had zero in this century and has gone 15 years total without one?

sucks to be reminded, but i'd say whoever wrote that piece is spot on.

You guys are reading this article the wrong way. It just means we're expected to win year in and year out, and we just haven't done it. Would you rather be #1 of an article titled "Programs that are now irrelevant"?

pretty much this.

People looking at this article like its something terrible about the program, its pretty much the truth and based on fan expectations and history, we should be competing for SEC titles and national championships year after year, but we havent in 10 years.

I hate it, but it is true. Every program has there up and their down periods. I truly feel like we have bottomed out of the horrible "DOOLS"drums we have been in for years. We are getting the players to contend for conference championships. Give this staff time to coach this team up and we will be SEC champions again, SOON,VERY SOON.

By the way djohhnyg you know less about football than most anyone I have seen on here.

You don't rise back to glory by starting the banjo player from Deliverance (Peterman) and the clueless Dobbs...who couldn't even throw it 55 yd's, and then the horrible Worley. No offense against those guys but they don't deserve to be in the SEC. Starting for Austin Peay? Maybe...or better yet some junior college somewhere.

Someone needs to tell CBJ that the QB position matters.

Troll? Is that you?

I can't see why anyone should be surprised by this. We should be number 1. The only team you could even argue for that spot would be Colorado, and their program has never been, historically, what UT's was and their national championship was much longer ago. No one else mentioned has come close to matching our 4 straight losing seasons.

From national champions to perennial SEC bottom feeders in just over a decade, that's pretty tough to do, even if you tried to run a program into the ground.

Wow.

I don't always herp, but when I do, I herp derp.

You say these things and then follow it with, "No offense against those guys, but they don't deserve to be in the SEC."

Unbelievable.

:lolabove::lolabove:

if you read or hear "no offense to those guys,but...",
you can bet someone is about to be offended by something stupid...

and yes, unfortunately the article is spot on in ranking UT#1...
too much history, too many wins, championships, expectations, and pride to have a record like UT has had the last 10 years...

If UT where a stock symbol traded on the SEC exchange, I would be buying hand over fist. There's tremendous value, a great new CEO, and an improving revenue stream (aka recruits). Granted the ROI may take 2-3 years but that's how you make easy money.

Be patient VN, buy into this major dip, and watch the orangebacks roll in.

I agree, but it's the equivalent of a Blue Chip trading as a penny stock.

As a student of this great institution during the 21st Century, I can confirm that the sports scene has been very disappointing of late.

Absolutely. Not winning an SEC title since 1998 or appearing in the SEC championship game since 2007 makes Vol fans feel that Tennessee is the most disappointing team of the 21st Century. And frankly, the grand majority of Vol fans could give a rip about any of the rest anyway. I think it is that very disappointment and gut wrenching angst over the fact that this is true which generates the grand majority of the threads and comments on VolNation.

I also think that is why there is such optimism in what is going on now. Tennessee should always be listed as one of the top programs and a day doesn't go by that CBJ pound in that point.

Glad to see people looking at this properly. We are a top 10 program ever and should be competing for championships and not with Kentucky to stay out of the cellar in the East. It's ridiculous and fortunately, coming to an end soon by the looks of things.

A few disappointments come to mind...

2001 SEC Championship
2004 SEC Championship
2005 Alabama game (Foster fumble)
2007 SEC Championship (Ainge interception)
2008 Wyoming
2009 Alabama (blocked fg)
2010 Kiffin leaves
2010 LSU (too many men on UT)
2010 UNC (too many men on UNC still blows my mind)
2011 Kentucky
2012 Georgia (shoot out Bray fumble)
2012 South Carolina (Clowney forced fumble)
2012 Missouri (40T loss)
2013 Georgia (fumble at goal line OT)
2013 Vandy

There were other disappointments but these were off the top of my head. Yep, I'd say we win the award.

I would really like to see a senator introduce a bill that bans bleacher report and similar similar sites from posting a ranking type article that requires a reader to scroll through 25 pages. They aren't getting much passed in DC anyway and after midterms the Dems won't be able to get anything passed.

Why don't you like Free Enterprise?

Really feel Michigan is the most deserving of this award. Don't get me wrong, we are absolutely in the top 5 for sure, top 3 IMO. We however, unlike the weak ten play in the hardest conference in college football, and have the hardest schedule/top 5 hardest schedules year in and year out. Michigan only has to really beat one team every year (OSU), They have a much easier road to be successful is basically why I think they should be #1.

You didn't even manage to mention 2005 Vandy. The entire 2002 season after being pre-season #2. The 187 fumbled snaps against Florida. Any bowl game played in the Georgia Dome and several other lowlights.
