8 team Playoff ...

I think your wrong about not allowing conference champs an automatic berth. That makes conference championships so meaningful. Then we would be saying who's on the bubble, etc. It would also eliminate the talk of well, they couldn't even win their conference, how are they Nc. So dramatic, it makes winning conference the golden ticket, it also allows a powerful team to get their say so in the Nc. I love it!

Not all conference champs deserve a shot at the title. Put the committee to use and let them pick the eight teams.

The closest Condi Rice was to football was banging Rick Upchurch.

I completely agree. Teams get into conf championship games all the time with horrendous records (like 4+ losses). No way they deserve a shot just because their half of a division is bad.

I'm all for this. I'd like to see it happen to give some of the smaller undefeated conference champs a shot. Plus, like a good miss st team with one loss may have a shot, or whoever it would be.

The conferences/school ADs would never agree to that though.

That'd pretty much mean throwing away an OOC home game (against a cupcake) which they would view as throwing away money.

I think that the biggest argument I heard against an 8 team playoff the last couple of years was it would make the season too long for the players.

No I know, and I'm not disagreeing with that aspect.

It's more of that shortening the season runs into another issue, loss of a home game's worth of revenue.

Joey Galloway just put forth a scenario where if mizzu goes to the sec championship and wins it, the sec would be left out of the playoffs all together. It'll go to 8 almost instantaneously if that happens.

Is in our near future imo. It is the best number of teams in division 1. You could take the power five conference champions plus three wild cards. I'd love to see this happen. Too many arguments for four teams. I foresee no reasonable arguments for a team getting left out that did not win conference or had two or three losses.

Jesus.

I've spilled enough pixels in the past predicting that morons would start asking for an 8 team playoff as soon as the 4 team got done. I see no reason to continue spilling pixels to emphasize that morons are predictable and that morons are morons.

I'm all for it but get ready for the dinosaurs to whine about how it will ruin college football.

It already has ruined CFB in my opinion. I'm so sick of hearing the talking heads blathering about this team or that one passing the "eye test", whatever that is supposed to be. It's a championship, not a beauty pagent.

I like the idea of an 8 team playoff but I don't feel winning a conference championship should get you an automatic bid. For example would you want to see Georgia Tech in the field of 8, they could beat FSU. I think you take the best 8 teams and roll with it. What year was it that the SEC finished the season with the Top 3 teams in the country?

That's why I'm not a fan of conference champions getting in. I do hope the east winner beats the west winner, would love to see Alabama or Miss St get knocked out.

My dream scenario is Auburn beats Alabama. Ole Miss beats Miss St. Then Mizzou beats Alabama in the SECCG. No SEC teams in the playoff.

There would be 3 wild cards, so the sec would have had all three in it if that scenario should arise. I'm loving the idea. I still like the conference champs to get in. It would be seeded 1-8, so the ga tech scenario would more than likely take care of itself in the first week. I think you would need to include the conference champs to keep it being an important part of the picture and make regular season important. Plus it would allow teams to play difficult non conference schedules knowing that even with a loss they could still win the conference title. I would never want it watered down with more than 8 in a playoff in d1, though. I know the four team will be around for awhile but I bet this is coming next.

Isn't there only 10 conferences? Just take those ten champions and play it off with bottom four ranked playing first round to get to 8 teams. I accept it in basketball, but in football I definitely am not a fan of giving a conference non-champion a shot at the national championship. If you didn't win your conference, you're out.

The second place SEC team is better than the other conference champs. Conference champs are extremely overrated.

It doesn't necessarily. Neither does the SEC winning another NC. I guess I'm going through SEC fatigue. If the Vols can't win it all I'd rather anybody from any other conference win it than another one of our rivals.

Doesn't the sec share bowl winnings? I'd say financially it helps UT the more teams that go to a bowl. Fatigue or no fatigue, money helps.

Hey WooPigSooie, here is the root of my SEC fatigue. The constant SEC chest pounding is quite nauseating.

You are just tired of Tennessee getting their ass whipped. Believe me when I say I understand the feeling.. no fanbase deserves to return to the spotlight like Tennessee. Hang in there man.. the Vols will be back and I'll be cheering for ya'll all the way .. unless, ya know .. we cross paths

Maybe, but that's very, very subjective. Even could be construed as seeing things thru SEC colored glasses. A Big 10, Pac 10, Big 12 fan will say they same thing about their second place team too. In the end its counter to what the purpose of a National Championship playoff does - proving it on the field. The #2 team in the conference had their chance but at the end of the day they aren't the best. They're the second best.

Football doesn't have the luxury that basketball does in playing numerous games allowing the great to separate from the good. All you have is 12 games to prove yourself. Even expanding it might get you 13, 14, at best 16 but no where near the 40 of bb. Much, much easier for teams to have the same record so all you can use is the one common denominator that D1 football has - the conference champion. Using anything less than conference champions is just handing out participation trophies for the year. Might as well play Upward Bound flag football and not keep score.
