1. Tennessee's record the previous season was 5-6.
2. Tennessee annihilated a wildly overrated Pac 10 team(UCLA/Cal).
3. Tennessee had an unimpressive victory against an unheralded western foe(Colorado State/Air Force).
4. Tennessee faces a highly regarded opponent who defeated them the previous season in their conference opener(Auburn/Florida).
5. Said conference opener is at home.

We'll see if the parallels hold up Saturday night.

Very interesting. Let's hope we fare better against the Tide than we did in 89.

i too like to compare this years team with the the 89 team (my favorite team). Results so far have been very similar but the style of play is very different. I hope the results will be the same at the end. We are more pass oriented vs run oriented in 89.

I feel hardesty has the raw talent to emerge as the star after starting as 2nd string like Webb did in 89.

This defense is vastly superior to the '89 group. The '89 D was just short of being awful.

I don't think Gary Hollingsworth will be throwing any Utah passes to Siran Stacey this year.

Even though we lost, I remember how overjoyed I felt at being liberated from having to watch Sterling Hinton play QB.

The big difference I see between the '89 team and this year's team is that so far we don't look nearly as good running the ball as we did back then.

I was at that Auburn game. It was awesome. I was the only one in my group who stayed dry.

Doesnt Reggie slack play and resemble Chris leak? That third game in 89 and 06 has eerily similar qb's for our opponent.

While I will never be mistaken for the President of the Chris Leak Fan Club, he's is infinitely better than Reggie Slack.

Actually . . . I kind of hope it does pour down. I think it helps our chances.

I wish we had the '89 O-line. Those guys were good--Antone Davis, Charles McRae, and Eric Still. Cobb/Webb wasn't all that bad, either.

While our running game seriously struggled agaisnt Air Force, we did rush for 200+ yards against Cal, so I don't think you can write off our running game just yet.

Some of that may depend on how well Foster heals up this week, if at all.
How many games does Foster have to miss or be limited in before our genius fans begin to call him a malingerer? If it's good enough for Jamal Lewis and Kelly Washington, this youngster certainly shouldn't be immune to it.

I was at the Auburn game. It was my freshman year and I still have the front page of the Sentinel somewhere. I think the headline was "Vols Reign." They tore down the goal posts and carried part of it down to the Lap where it hung with honor behind the bar. That will go down as one of the top games I have ever witnessed. Good Times.

I will be quite surprised if Cal goes only wins 3 games. In fact, I will be quite surprised if Cal does not win 9 games.
That doesn't mean they aren't wildly overrated. In the SEC or Big 10 they would be a 5 to 7 win team. As an aside, I missed the score Saturday, how bad did Washington beat Oklahoma?
